On a more serious note, I'd rather like to see more varied marketing strategies used in the gaming industry. Yes, on one side it seems the best strategy to aim for the statistical norm of your targeted audience. But in doing so, marketing loses focus of it's own goal. To capture an individuals attention to draw intrest to the advertised product.
I see far too often in the business world where entire industies aim for this undefined, amophous blob to market to, as if everyone was a living reresentation of some probability distribution.

Ah yes, because a strange or bizarre allure based on ones heritage is not racist at all. They should be glad that they don't have a normal beauty or allure.

The Mass Effect 1 cover featured multiple aliens and a woman in addition to the "generic" white male. There were no American flags, or current-era rifles, or camouflaged uniforms like what you'd expect from a truly "generic" shooter. Furthermore, if you actually bothered to turn the case over, you'd see more aliens, and a bit of the blurb touting customisation and character interaction.fiveforchaos wrote...
Exactly, I'm not necessarily an educated buyer all the time (or at least I wasn't back then) I will buy, or at least look at games, based soley on the cover, and that's the case with a lot of consumers too. If a game looks like another game I know I don't like, then I won't look at that game either, even though Mass Effect has a lot of elements (good story, characters, customizable PC etc...) that I did like in my games.
I'm kind of amazed that the default male Shepard cancels all of that out.

How about using one of those lovely WoCs from the concept art as an Inquisitor in those demos of yours instead of Generic White Man #47. That'd be great. Thanks.
Because:
*snip*
Seriously, they can't even begin to fathom sharing that coveted "promo/canon" space with a man of color, you really think they will let a woman (let alone a woman of color) STEAL that spot?
But hey, Qunari with HORNS as a playable race. That's totally not pandering to fan demands AT ALL.
In all seriousness I wish Bioware would make a canon black protagonist (with FABULOUS hair). Ever see the sh*t storm that happens when there's a black superman or black batman? But nah, that doesn't make those people racist. they just feel threatened by images of something that doesn't conform to their expectations and expect/demand that the status quo used to marginalize everyone else be maintained for the sake of "coherency/logic".
Haha that mug is fantastic.
What you say is true though, when Idris Elba was cast in Thor there were websites dedicated to boycotting the movie, but when Bane went from hispanic to English, no one batted an eye (except to swoon over Tom Hardy).
It's an unfortunate double standard.
pretty sure the responses to it are going to be more hilarious.
and yeah the level of unfortunate the double standards are in media are about as high/as many as the people who belong to these privilege groups who will attempt to dimiss and talk over any valid claim made by people affected by their privilege.
it's almost like people like us don't know our place

And going by the first definition is entirely subjective. If you have 20 japanese women in a room with one white women guess who is exotic.
Hint: the answer is not one woman in a room with 20 exotic women. So using exotic to define someone who looks like they're from another country than you is still racist.

Perhaps you need eyeglasses or a jaunty monocle, my friend, because I seem to recall myself saying that BioWare continues to showcase a Generic White Male, and not that all white people are generic
P.S. Even if I had said that, yes, it would be different.

We are all human that's all that should matter, it doesn't matter if we're black, white, asian, hispanic, male or female. We're not going to get anywhere in life by picking apart aesthetic differences.
Dear god the 'racism' card has been played. This plane is heading for the orphanage full of orphans and puppies. OH THE HUMANITY!

Edit: Unless your goal is to assume myself and other white males have never had to deal with any adversity in our lives. Then I guess some have succeeded here (see above).

She was white washed but still looked "exotic" enough for people comfortable with the change to argue that it was "okay" and not at all something sinister, because it didn't make them uncomfortable.
Whereas the people who share similarly "exotic" traits with Izzy are left feeling that someone they could relate to was lightened for mass media, thus cheapening their representation on Dragon Age, which is a legitimate claim.

So I should feel guilty for being born white? The hell?
There are other types of adversity that people have to deal with in the world. I grew up as a minority in my town/neighborhood/school despite being white, if you really want to go there.
Edit: On Izzy, I'm not really trying to argue anything. Just had a misunderstanding on what the actual argument was. She still looked darker-skinned to me in that trailer, but that's just my opinion in an argument that has nothing to do with me.

The fact that you've dealt with adversity in your life does not mean you understand systematic oppression/erasure/underrepresentation/etc.
