For the record, I'm a white male, and I will never apologize for being one. That said, and it was not intended to be offensive, I also realize that people who are not my race and/or gender have suffered under a level of...oppression may be a bit strong of a word, but not overly so, and it's the only one that fits...in western culture. White males have been the primary face of most entertainment media, from gaming to movies and beyond, and it's far past time that this changed.

I have no issues whatsoever with a non-white or non-male or any mix thereof being the "face" of DA:I or any new IP from BioWare. I would welcome it, but there's a "but" coming here.

I am of the opinion that the ultimate goal is to remove the biases towards race overall, and I don't know if the best way to do that is to start showcasing other races, or to not show any race at all on the cover art of games, and not have a "standard" canon protagonist in a game like Dragon Age. I would rather see a cover like the "N7 Edition" of Mass Effect 3, which simply had an N7 on the cover, or the fist and sword idea mentioned earlier in this thread, and then have a character generator for the demo, so your character can be customized how you see them. However, I can understand (as best I can from my perspective) that this can be seen as a fear to show a non-white/male protagonist, and therefore be backhanded, subtle racism. I personally think that such a view may be a bit overly-sensitive, but since I don't have to live with racism, I can't fully understand it, so maybe my feeling that it's over-sensitive isn't being sensitive enough from my perspective. I believe my opinion is valid, however, and I think it's better overall to remove the idea of race being a selling point (as an end goal, anyways), so hopefully we can all come closer to the ideal of being human first, race and creed only as defining characteristics of that.

That being said, I'd prefer a black, female Inquisitor as the media face of DA:I to a white, male protagonist.

I prefer a black male as Shepard in my Mass Effect games (and yes, I am eschewing MoC, since that can be used for Asian, African-American, or any other non-white ethnicity), and I know this can easily sound like a random white guy saying "but I have black friends!" but that's not how I mean it. I am simply relating how I view Shepard, and it's as a black male.

To those of you who are arguing against this, I would ask you "Why?" Marketing a game is much more than the face shown on the cover. The story (without spoilers) the game mechanics, the graphics, the party system, any and all of these can, and should, be of more interest to any gamer. So to the OP, I would say "Why not?" Let's see more diversity in the protagonists and media art.

My only complaint about the OP is this: Please don't use "generic" as a description for white male protagonists. You, as a non-white (non-male?) have certainly faced things I can only peripherally be aware of, but this kind of terminology will not endear you to anyone you are trying to convince. It would have been enough to say "Let's not have another white male protagonist" without the "generic" bit. I can understand where that is coming from, but it does not help your cause, and your cause is one I fully support.

Just my $0.02. Take it for what it's worth.

It's a standard term. It's as appropriate as LGBT.

Oh, you dudebros are starting to catch on. There's hope yet for this world:lol:

I'm such a hardcore dudebro that I'm taking time off from my usual schedule of playing football (American of course), doing keg stands, and ****ing ****s to post on the forum of a developer that makes games about dragons.

. My comment is racist, easily,  The only person who could make that call though, is someone who is black anyone. And if they call me out, I shall have to step down.

It's good to see you start to recognize your privilege and what you don't get to do with it. ;)

So if I outstep the boundaries of my privilege are the Privilege Police going to arrest me and force me to take a 30 day rehabilitory Sociology course in order to understand the trials of the beautiful POC and why I should be ashamed of being white?

The arrogance of some of these PC types is pretty astounding. Thief happens to be one of the more militant and hotheaded of the lot. Fun to watch.

and shorthand is very common on the internet. complaining about the acronyms seems like a waste of time, we know what op meant so i dunno what ophir hopes to accomplish with that.
