I can't believe there isn't a thread about this yet. I'm here to put a stop to this injustice! Rah.

Here is a kickstarter project, Mighty No. 9, headed by Keiji Inafune, creator of the Mega Man franchise. As you can probably tell, this is a spiritual successor to Mega Man, because Capcom is basically a bag of dicks and the actual Mega Man is rotting in their dumpster. So the idea is to pull Mega Man's spirit out of the dumpster and make a new one without Capcom, which, assuming it's not stopped by a copyright hammer, sounds like it could be pretty great. It hit its initial goal very quickly.

As far as gameplay goes, it appears to be like Mega Man, but with powers that are more than just a buster upgrade-- they are whole body transformations. The plot is basically that there's some kind of virus messing up all the robots, and so as Beck, the ninth and best (obviously) member of the "mighty number," you need to go find out what's up with that. You have a sidekick named Call, whose character design will be decided democratically apparently, which feels kind of weird personally after the whole ME3 thing with femship, but whatev. Apparently Inafune would like to integrate fan opinions in this manner in a multitude of ways.

Go ahead and talk about it, if you want. I do wonder what will happen to all that money if it's funded and then hit with the copyright hammer, though. I assume it's just lost to the ether, then. Or if the problem with Mega Man's woes was more Inafune than Inafune wants to admit...

Nahhh, it'll be fine. If nothing else, just listen to this. Aww yeah.

I'm curious as to what the mystery stretch goal is, I have a feeling it will be portable versions.

And i second "Suck it Capcom".

It looks interesting. I wonder though if Capcom could sue the Kenji if the concept is too similar to Megaman. It had happened before with Nintendo games.

Feels great to flip Capcom the finger with this.

I think they've been adding some stretch goals recently--

$2,750,000: BECK & CALL ONLINE CO-OP CHALLENGE MODE!

We’re excited about all our stretch goals, but even so, this one is really special to us: based on your feedback, we wanted to offer something that both included Call as a playable character and put her on equal footing as Beck, while not breaking our schedule or budget. We also wanted this to be something new -- something the genre has never seen before. And that’s how we came up with this: over a dozen missions you can play online with a friend, playing as Beck and his community-appointed partner, Call! Like the single-player offline challenge Mode, these missions will be parts of levels remixed, but this time around the theme of cooperative play. Players will need to use Beck and Call’s different powers to complement each other and defeat these special challenges!

That sounds pretty neat actually. Has Mega Man ever had co-op?

Looks interesting, though I wish it wasn't a straight up Mega Man clone.

They just added that as the $3,500,000 stretch goal. I'm not sure if the final push will be enough to reach that, though...

I wonder if my trash laptop would be able to play this? I doubt it. I'll also hope that this somehow finds its way to the 3DS. I'd definitely buy it.

Less than 48 hours left, $400k away from the 3ds stretch goal (counting Paypal). Hard to say if it'll make it, but for comparison, Eternity got $600k on the last day on its way to its $4 million total.

I have to admit though, that's a lot of platforms-- Windows, Mac, Linux, PS3, PS4, X360, XOne, Wii U, 3DS, Vita. Is that amount of porting really feasible within the scope of these 200ks of additional monies? That's something about Kickstarter generally that I wonder about... if fulfilling all the stretch goals and tier rewards doesn't become an all consuming burden to the detriment of the game itself...

I am pleasantly surprised at how well this kickstarter did. I'm hoping that it can reach the 3DS/Vita goals although I am doubtful. Shame really, I think a game like this will have the most impact on those consoles. I am content enough to play it on my PS3/PS4 and 360 however.

I wonder what Capcom thinks about the success of this kickstarter, after all they gave up on the Mega Man IP, they just assumed there was no market for it, hopefully now they know better.

I think the copyright issue is going to be very interesting, especially if the game is really successful.

Yeah. It is very similar to Mega Man, but they explicitly avoid ever referencing Mega Man directly, and there seem to be a lot of "clones" out there that copy a successful franchise's gameplay pretty gratuitously without running into legal trouble. (though I dislike calling it a 'clone,' in spirit at least, since it's his idea to begin with)

I don't know where the legal line would be drawn though, if challenged, or whether Capcom has the stomach to endure the possible PR quagmire and possible loss of the case itself to even make such a challenge in their current bleak situation. Or they could just decide that they don't feel like it infringes on their copyright.

Anyways, it looks like they'll definitely be hitting the 3ds stretch goal. So, you 3ds peoples. Be happy or something. (and gobackitnao)

I think where it gets iffy is that we're talking about the creator of the franchise. Even if the usual IP/copyright regime doesn't catch you, there might be some confidentiality/non-compete clauses Capcom could try to hang their hat on.

Back on topic, I'm really psyched for a 3DS version. I think that's one of the keys to making the game a smash hit - I think Mega Man like gameplay is ideal for the handhelds.

So close! I'd love to have this on the go.

Here's hoping there 4 million mark is some kind of SDK.

EDIT: Image IPB

I increased my pledge to $80 a while back.

And we're close to getting the chip tune goal!

I proudly backed it with $250 when it's started but now I have serious doubts on how they'll do everything they're promising with just 4M dollars.

Wow, they passed 4 million, nice. That's about the third most funded game on Kickstarter ever. (not sure exactly considering Paypal)
