I have the fallouts, the crysises, borderlands, alan wakes, batmans, skyrim..
I've been playing fallout 3, but not really into it.. I have never played skyrim, but I require direction. I like my games to be very story-driven, and get engulphed in the story, not just the character.
Big directionlss ORRPGs just intimidate me.. My idea of an open world rph would ge a game like dragon age origins, but open world like TES with direction that leads you through the world while opening the doors for you, for sidequests.. (Ie.. time to go to denerim. oh look, in denerim, theres 2 factions.. go throughout the world and giving you the options, rather than plopping you in a 9000 mile kingdom like "have fun bud")
AAAAAANNNNNNYYYYYYWAY, any suggestions? I'ver played kotor, the dragon ages, MEs, also like japanese stuff like the lost odyssey, saints row.. Always have trouble remembering games I've played/enjoyed.

Also, Xeno Gears (released in 1998, also from Squaresoft) one of the best (but complex) story even today.
If you intend to try Bethesda games, such as Skirym or fallout new vegas, i suggest you to download serval mod, better texture, better lightning, better render, better characters, even today it is top noch quality that not all AAA games could accomplish.

One of the best, if not the best, story driven games I ever played was Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines. Its a bit dated now, but an amazing story and atmosphere.
Another good one.
Which also reminds me of another old but good game:
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicka Obscura

Surprised to not see the two NWN games on these lists. The OCs weren't all that good in either, but the expansion and fan campaigns are fine.
While not rich NWN could offer a great D&D experience. Neverwinter nights is like a D&D simulator to be honest. A great character creation and development platform too.

Me'ish, but not close to the quality of presentation and voice actors, but still a competent story driven 3rd person shooter/rpg.
The new Tomb Raider was very, very good. Not really a RPG, but it's got a semi-open world, skill progression and character progression. The new Lara is one of the best new video game characters to come around in a long time, and the game is damn fun to play through.
