If you liked FO1+2 and didn't really get into FO3, there you are. I'd play it for the companion characters alone.

Key characteristics would be factions (3 with different initiation process) , teachers system, harder combat, living wilderness (some animals warning before attack, other hunting) and non-leveling creatures spawning each chapter. Some quest have multiple solution, especially in G2, where is one special with 8 solutions.
Problematic should be graphic (big jumps between 3 games) and sometimes buggy G3 (biggest open world, but there is good community patch).
You can buy whole trilogy in quite cheap bundle on Steam. Just don't buy bundle with Gothic: Arcania. It was done by different studio and stripped for nearly all characteristic elements (factions, teachers, companions...) to be more friendly to new casual players. Result is average hack and slash empty story in nice graphic.

What i love in Fallout NV is that nomatter where i go and for which faction i do quest, il will pay in some way at the end, so i feel like everything i do is important for the main story.
This is definitly what it is lacking in Fallout 3 or Elder scroll games; you have a huge world with tone of contant, but only 10 or 15% is for the main story, the rest of it is just killing times, which often make me lost intrest in playng in the long run because i lost the purpose of what i'm doing in it for anyway.

The Dark Eye: Drakensang - plays a bit like Baldur's Gate, and looks like a mix between Dragon Age: Origins and The Witcher 1. Not a bad storyline as well.
The Witcher 1: Twice as long but a less heavy storyline compared to it's sequel, I still believe it's worth it.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 (with TotSC and ToB expansions), add the BGT Mod and you have the best RPG ever made.
Plus the NPC Project for the first game (the original Baldur's Gate was before Bioware really got into banter and personal quests for companions. NPC Project adds that in)

Thanks for the link... I was curious as to who the former writer was (I wondered if maybe it was L'Étoile...). Now I know for certain I won't be investing on this, even if it looks promising

Yeah, Deus Ex: Human Revolution was excellent.
Agreed, also Mars War Logs and Spec Ops:The Line
There is a Kickstarter going for a game Ambrov X that looks interesting. I've signed up to sponcer it so I hope they get their funding. Instead of Renegade/Paragon they play 4 paths for your character to pick in dialogs that'll shape the story.

YES. Spec Ops: The Line was incredible. To anyone being put off, because it looks like an abnormal military shooter:Kunari801 wrote...

It's much more than that. Fantastic story and almost perfected combat.

I thought Two Worlds 2 was fun as well but there are better choices (which all have already been names).
Also, since Spec Ops: The Line is here (which really is a good game), if you care more about story than the RPG elements, you might want to take a look at the Assassins Creed series. Especially the Ezio title have a compelling and well presented story arc, IMO.

Yhea, too bad that boss fight are one of the worst ever boss fight.
Yeah, it shows that it was developed outside the team that worked on the rest of the game, for it felt tacked on.
To the original topic, most that I could recommend are already listed, but a word of caution when looking at some of the older games they are showing their age and that might hurt the experience for a first time player. One game I don't see mentioned here is Jade Empire overall its not a bad game, but does have a few flaws and is also showing its age.

I just want a recent game with an immersive, good story..
i just spent $1700 on pc/equipment and I have nothing to use it on. lol
Guess I might need to play DA:O or ME for the 11th time. lol.
Gothic is from like 2001, I'm kind of ashamed of it, but I'm kind of a spoiled graphics sl*t. (don't even play indie games)
edit: just started alan wake.. ran out of bullets and I'm stuck in chapter 2

What I personally found having a compelling story too is Darksiders, but it's more of a hack&slash with RPG elements.
Alan Wake is quite nice as well, especially the atmosphere. The ending is a bit...odd though.
@bluebullets: What about Max Payne 3? And have you tried The Witcher 2 yet? Bioshock Infinite? Tomb Raider? Metro Last Light?

I personally really enjoyed Skyrim, but not really for the immersive story, since it doesn't have one. It does have a few interesting questlines, but nothing really standing out (just like Oblivion, which a lot of people seem to find the better game for some reason).
