Starflight, never played that one unfortunately.
Available at GOG for $6 bundled with the sequel.
Here's an article about it. Basically the original sandbox RPG.
ME1's planetary exploration seems to be a homage to Starflight's, the difference being that it made more sense in Starflight.

Freelancer was great indeed, quite the enjoyable experience. It's spiritual predecessor (Privateer 2) wasn't as bad either by the way.Han Shot First wrote...

I also liked the Dreamfall games.
I do not know of very much that is as epic in scale as Mass Effect. I tried dragon age and while it is long, it didn't keep my attention as well.

I loved the multiplayer of Freelancer. I played on a large, permanent (at the time) server and have very fond memories of running player blockades of key contraband worlds in lawless space. The joy of their tears still makes me smile today. SP game wasn't bad either. Did you ever find the easter egg Planet of the Apes in FL?

*ducks head to avoid being pelted with rotting fruit*
The game had some serious issues (mechanics), but the characters and story were top notch. Moreover, somehow OBSIDIAN got away with completely stealing the MASS EFFECT conversation system. Funny part is, that they actually implemented it much better than in any game to date (including ME). Conversations and decisions have tangible effects on future missions and interactions in very detailed ways (choose to go renegade and shoot an arms dealer, and all enemies in the region will have down graded weapons, etc.). The leveling system is also a direct port of ME's.
Had OBSIDIAN just used an ME game engine, ALPHA PROTOCOL would have been a top notch game, unfortunately it suffers some serious mechanics issues. That said, play it and you'll see/feel the obvious similarities.

Don't know why exactly. Maybe the Middle Eastern setting didn't really appeal to me, or maybe I was annoyed by the checkpoint system, and the accompanying frustrations.
I believe the game I dumped Alpha Protocol over was actually Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Which did a lot of gameplay elements in AP better (in my opinion).

ME uses a patented wheel whereas Alpha Protocol just maps the 4 controller options; ME uses a paragon/renegade systems whereas Alpha Protocol uses a "Sensible", "Being a d!ck", "Being another kind of d!ck" and "Being yet another kind of d!ck" options (seriously, there is a single conversation in the entire game where you get a better outcome by not picking the "Professional" stance)somehow OBSIDIAN got away with completely stealing the MASS EFFECT conversation system
Re BGEE: It's very faithful to the source material i.e. BG1, and it shows - characters have very little dialogue, and virtually no interactions between them (e.g. compare Viconia and Jaheira fighting over male!bhaalspawn to... Garrick getting one generic line of approval which he'll randomly say if he's in the party with people he likes). Characters are fairly low level, so you don't get any of the "cool" spells, and any random encounter may spell inevitable doom for your party (e.g. good luck surviving a "bandit shooting squad" encounter unless you are a heavily armoured fighter which can be encountered the first time you travel on the map i.e. before you meet that old spoiler)

Sleep spells are your friend in BG1, especially against archers.
AP has been sitting uninstalled in my steam library for years, I may have to actually play it someday. I'll have to look for the 'required' mods (sorry Obsidian, but you have that coming)

Not RPG like, but story driven: Homeworld 1, Homeworld Cataclysm and Homeworld 2
New Homeworld is coming up! The main problem is, that Gearbox is making this... Reason to be worried?
Also you can check out Warcraft I - III but i don't recomend you now WoW, since patch 5.4 is released week ago and this is final patch for MoP.
Also i recomend a really nice browser game Forge Of Empires... I think, this game is created in inspiration by Civilization and Age Of Empires series, that wich both are really good.

The issue with Alpha Protocol is that gameplay is rather poor by comparison - there is no enemy variety, pistols dominate the other weapon choices (that is to say, they are better than all the other guns in every possible situation in the game, are the only silent or non-lethal ranged option even without the utterly broken chain shot), minigames become essentially impossible as you go along, etc.
There's some enemy variety, but it's not obvious. G22 agents are susceptible to flashbangs (they wear those night vision goggles after all) and VCI mercs wear body armor, but are weak against shock traps.
Pistols are crazy-powerful, definitely. Though subsonic rounds in the assault rifle are silent as well.
Minigames ae a fun challenge to me, but you do have to keep leveling up sabotage and technical aptitude. There are armor mods that make it easier too.
Seriously, I was advocating Bioware "borrowing" AP's mod system since ME2

"Better" is in the eye of the beholder. There's tradeoffs to everything. And sometimes it's worth p*ssing off someone to get a different result. And sometimes it's just plain more satisfying.

Still waiting for the NPC Project mod to become available for BGEE

Alpha Protocol was an awesome game, highly underrated.
Totally agree with you. Certain aspects for the gameplay was pretty irritating, but if you thought Mass Effect had "choices with consequences" then Alpha Protocol took that to the next level. Shame there will be no AP2, where they could fix the broken parts of the first game.
But yeah; Buy BG1+ToSC and BG2+ToB (BG:EE was horrible, get the originals), then add the Trilogy mod, add the BG2 fix pack, add the BG1 NPC mod, add the unfinished buisness mods for BG1 and BG2, add the two BG1 banter packs, widescreen mod, updated graphics mod - takes about an hour to download and install everything - and then you have potentially a 300+ hour epic rpg. It makes Dragon Age look about as interesting as Call of Duty.

Woops. Yeah, that's pretty much a must have as well.
