Sexbot or Lover?

I have never put much thought into her relationship with Joker untill i saw this.
With her physical apearance it is easy to picture EDI as a mindless machine that was created for the sole purpose of serving her owner's desires, and it seems the Jeff is often painted as such a person.
However unlike the doll in the video EDI is actualy reponsive and can creat her own opinion and preference, there is nothing that binds her to Jeff(at least as far as we were told).
So why does it seem like there are many who see Joker as a lonely pervert who can only find compionship in a sextoy, while accepting Shepards relationships with aliens and not dub him/her as a sick Xenophile.
Why is it harder to see Joker's relationship with EDI as a legit relationship.
Or perhaps it is easier to ask why is it harder to accept Joker's relationship with EDI as love.

- A general backlash against any mandatory squadmates in general. Hence Liara, EDI, and James receiving by far the most complaints from the BSN. Hence Miranda being heavily criticized when ME 2 was released and suddenly becoming lauded in ME 3.
- A general backlash towards beauty and sexual appeal in fiction in general, and in particular characters who become more appealing, such as EDI. This specific phenomenon is a subset of the more general phenomenon of 'Effortless Perfection,' which I've briefly discussed here.
- A tendency of players to reflexively disagree with whatever the writers supposedly think. Plenty of people on the BSN are frustrated with the developers and feel powerless, so they basically automatically disagree with whatever themes the narrative pushes in a gesture of supposed defience, power, and independence. In reality, of course, such a gesture is indicative of little more than foolishness and the aformentioned powerlessness.

So to answer your main question: I don't regard AIs as legitimate living beings. There, I'm close-minded, but I can't help it.
On the other hand though, I would never call Joker a freak for falling in love with someone -or even something- because like everyone who's been around the block a couple of times knows, if it happens, it happens. As long as it's consensual and he/she/it is not a minor, I'm fine with it. The only real problem I have with the relationship is, that it never struck me as a "true lovestory". It's more like "Oh, my ship is a robot that looks female, and hey Shep, we're a couple now."
BTW the term sexbot comes from Jack.

I still think it's a bit hypocritical to draw the line at EDI's body. I mean, infiltration robots designed to be sexy aren't okay but bisexual immortal alien hotties who can bang anything that moves are? Yeesh.

I don't even know where you're getting that from to begin with. Anyone who ever played the game knows EDI's body was neither built as Joker's sexbot, nor is it left unanswered why it's looking so overly curvy: It has original been an infilitration unit.
I didn't say EDI was created as a Sexbot,i said it is easy to picture her as a sexbot.
Thanks for the reminder,i forgot about that.Baelrahn wrote...

Edi is a grotesque mockery of life and the idea that someone could have a relationship with it is an abomination.

Oh believe me, there's no of shortage people who think Shepard romancing aliens is depraved and disgusting or how s/he's able to have sex with the likes of Garrus and Tali without any medical issues is dumb as hell.

As for aliens, the romances are the least of my complaints. I don't care for Shepard having so much investment and agency in alien lives, period. I wish his/her involvement was less significant and took more time to earn.

EDI is a robot, her body constructed of dead material. She lacks any emotion or objection. Joker is basically using a highly advanced sextoy.

Well, there are a lot of medical issues. Most of the time Shep just isn't on the receiving end.

Yeah, I actually find Shepard's romance with aliens to be more unpalatable than Joker's relationship with EDI.

Maybe we don't like EDI because she is a regressive character who was made "attractive" in a shallow attempt to boost her popularity.

You find Shepard's relationship with sentient beings less palatable than Joker banging a glorified blowup doll?HYR 2.0 wrote...

Yes infiltration robots walking around naked all the time won't stand out at all.I still think it's a bit hypocritical to draw the line at EDI's body. I mean, infiltration robots designed to be sexy aren't okay but bisexual immortal alien hotties who can bang anything that moves are? Yeesh.
My $0.02: EDI tries to act human (in the most creepy way imaginable, such as suggesting to drug Joker to make him engage in sex), and as such her behaviour will always be an act.

When did Eva Core ever walk around naked? Don't forget who the body was designed for, because it wasn't EDI.

Wow, really? The point is that a naked robot is allowed to roam the Citadel. Why would anyone even write in a character that roams around naked?Kataphrut94 wrote...
When EDI has the body, she's never doing any infiltrating so it doesn't matter if she wears clothes or not. The body was built for Eva Core to infiltrate the Mars archives, and she wore clothes. I shouldn't have to explain this, should I?
