...That's phrasing for you.

I just mean that I don't see her as a lifeless thing that doesn't have self preservationist instincts.
The difference between living creatures and objects is the determination to continue existence.
Due to familiarity and social construct; I used the word 'soul' a little to casually. I apologize for any confusion.

What is a soul, and how do you give a robot one?

I think it's a firmware upgrade. Of course, if you forget to wear a grounding bracelet when you install it, you might end up with a Spanish robot.

Three primary reasons.

- A general backlash against any mandatory squadmates in general. Hence Liara, EDI, and James receiving by far the most complaints from the BSN. Hence Miranda being heavily criticized when ME 2 was released and suddenly becoming lauded in ME 3.

- A general backlash towards beauty and sexual appeal in fiction in general, and in particular characters who become more appealing, such as EDI. This specific phenomenon is a subset of the more general phenomenon of 'Effortless Perfection,' which I've briefly discussed here.

- A tendency of players to reflexively disagree with whatever the writers supposedly think. Plenty of people on the BSN are frustrated with the developers and feel powerless, so they basically automatically disagree with whatever themes the narrative pushes in a gesture of supposed defience, power, and independence. In reality, of course, such a gesture is indicative of little more than foolishness and the aformentioned powerlessness.

This said it better than I could. Your question was answered instantly it seems.

That's not the way I feel at all, and think she's a sexbot. Where is your god now?

This is somewhat true. Miranda was mandatory, but only for certain things. And it was possible for her to die if you tried hard enough.  It's also got to do with the fact that, when ME2 was released, Miranda was way more sexualized than the other characters. In the context of ME3, she didn't stand out--something I'll get back to in the below responses.

Wrong. Beauty and sexual appeal in fiction, live action or otherwise, has long been an integral element in stories and in developing the characters (predating even the Iliad). There's no backlash against it. What there is a backlash to is overdoing it for no apparent reason. Case and point in this series:

-Fans of ME1 were, by and large, completely fine with the nudity in the game. In a sex scene. Granted, one that was pretty mild, but nonetheless, that's definite sexual content, and a lot of people look back on it and don't mind.

-Jump to ME3, people complaining about why Traynor wasn't naked when she was taking a shower.

In both instances, nudity makes sense. And nudity in a sex scene is pretty damned sexual. The kind of sexuality that people complain about for this game are why all the main female characters (except Tali; and Miranda, whose boobs were already big) suddenly got larger breasts. Or why Ashley got a makeover and fights in a skin tight outfit with high heels instead of normal shoes or boots. Or, in the case of EDI, why her robot form also had to be so over-the-top.

That's part of why Miranda got the backlash that she did. Up until her appearance, none of the sexual aspects were quite so over the top. When ME3 came around, she suddenly went from being a big fish in a small pond to being that same fish in a much larger ocean. She stopped sticking out so much for what got her the negative attention to begin with.

This is simply not true. Most players had zero problems with Mordin's or Garrus' or Wrex's or Tali's or Jack's characterization. Why? Because they were all well-written. A guy who falls in love with a  robot no matter what you do to try to influence him is something most people are going to find far-fetched no matter what fandom you look at. They made fun of this in an episode of Futurama years ago, long before the Mass Effect series even existed in any published form. So no, this isn't some "player tendency." Some people just don't care about the robots.

Strange...

I would think most people don't have a problem with EDI and Joker.

I mean, in Trek fandom, nobody says anything about Tasha Yar banging Data and this was BEFORE he got his emotion chip.

Same thing with bladrunner/"do androids dream of electric sheep".

This romance plotline bothers me because EDI is an AI without hormones, and is not a sexbot so she shouldn't have any sexual desires. No matter how close her relationship to Joker is, it should really be platonic on her part.

An AI might wish to expand its knowledge/understanding of organics and what better way than a relationship if Joker has already expressed interest that way?

Because she's a robot. Naked robots (if you can even call them 'naked', seeing as they have no real anatomy or need for clothing) are not an issue worth dealing with. You want to complain about nudity in Mass Effect games, complain about Jack.

EDI's body has all the physical faculties to blend in with and socialize with organics. The cameltoe isn't just there for show, you know.

I always used the black suit so it never even occurred to me, so out of curiosity, I went to Google images to see what they were on about. Welp. Glad I never used that white suit.

If you thought that was bad then there is a picture of a banshee that you definitely don't want to see.

Hard to see during gameplay, and that's the way I like it.  Though, to be fair, it's basically just a corrupted alien that used to have what was basically a woman's body. Just be glad there's no cannibal nethers waving around...or at least I hope there aren't.

I just felt EDI's transformation in ME3 felt so superflous. I really wish she'd just stayed in her little blue bubble. Her role in ME3 just made me cringe and shudder.

That's how many people felt. For some reason the devs felt like they needed to give her a sexy body. Damned if I know why. Oh, wait...

In true red dwarf style, I wonder if EDI has different groinal attachments? She certainly has the slot for them.
