Would the series be better off if Cerberus was the main villian instead of the Reapers?

Perhaps it would have worked better if ME1 was same but ME2's villains ended up being controlled or events orchestrated by Cerberus setting them up as the big bad. Then in 3 the two pronged war would work better.

I don't know if the Reapers are the appropriate antagonists for the series. Think about it: 2km tall immortal spaceships in a third-person shooter game? That's why we found ourselves fighting random mercs, Geth and Cerberus during the vast majority of the trilogy.

That's a good point. I first sat down to play ME knowing almost nothing about it and kept expecting that at some point I'd be fighting an actual space battle.

And who would want a game that tries to mix up elements from several genres where appropriate when ME's trying to be a simplistic shooter is the natural order of things?

Problem with Mass Effect was that it wasn't a simplistic enough shooter. They should make it a straight forward linear cover shooter without the pretension of choices.

I doubt as many people would care for Mass Effect if there were no choices to be made. If it was nothing more than a simplistic cover shooter, I know for certain that I never would have bothered.

Mass Effect already has no choices. ;)
