I'm thinking some colony farmguy/girl who gets lumped into adventure. What's more opposite to a space marine than that? :P

They'll be exactly like Shepard in every single way, except in being called Shepard.

Nah, they won't do space marine again, this is the #1 definining characteristic of Shep. He/she may eventually basically turn into one, but not gonna start like ME1 did, middle-of-ongoing-military-career etc

Military or not, it's going to be one of a few classes of combat specialists that will probably be trained to use every class of gun regardless, just like ME3. I suppose it's anyone's guess as to what the backstory will be, but the thing I'm really curious about is the level of customization of the PC's face. I would guess that BioWare's not going to skimp on the options, and probably going to provide more to up the ante. Prepare for Shepard clones with different voices/names.

As for my guess:

An emotionally damaged soldier with one foot in the grave forced to do horrific stuff in order to "win" and die.<_<

Hmm.. maybe a little bit of flipping. Someone who was very important once but then became an average Joe/Jane and is grudgingly dragged into action because <reasons>, as opposed to Shepard who gradually rose in prestige.

A selfish mofo who ain't got no time for galaxy saving.

Well except the colony part, a farmer really doesn't have much to do with colony attack survivor who enlisted in military at 16

I sure hope we don't have to play a human again. Otherwise Space Jebus 2.0

**** if I know. This story doesn't seem to go anywhere I could predict.

Maybe that's a good thing.

I could be wrong here but somewhere I heard that with colony background Shepards family were supposed to be farmers. Would make sence since Mindoir is a farming colony.

Hmm, I never picked that background so perhaps it was mentioned somewhere (probably in ME1 side-quest) if true

A space Wizard:P, he can explain to us what 'space magic' is.

I think the next character might be a scientist/engineer, if they try to separate him/her from the large shadow cast by Shepard. It's just a suspicion...

A janitor. He goes from system to system cleaning up the messes Shepard left behind.

I've seen two possibilities that I would really enjoy: a James Bond-esque superspy, or a Malcolm Reynolds style rogue

I'm torn between whether I think Bioware will go the Star Trek route (all protagonists are Alliance officers) or whether they'll go in a different direction and have a protagonist with a completely different background.

Assuming for a moment that they roll with the latter, I'm going to guess a space pirate.  If they really wanted a character that was different from Shepard, that would be the route to go. A selfish rogue in command of a dirty, beat-up, patched up, and jerry-rigged ship that is far from being state-of-the-art, manned by an undisciplined crew of cutthroats, mercenaries, and scoundrels.

I think they sort of blew their load with the ME3 Shepard.. it'll be weird to play a protagonist that picks up after where the last game left off. In ME1 and ME2, you carried out a lot of small (but still noteworthy) acts, and topped them off with an epic act. In ME3, it's one epic act after another. It's ridiculous really. Shepard moves from badass savior of colonies and a leader who could help his crew with their personal stuff to a Space Jebus who can end 300 year long wars with one small squad battle, cure thousand year long political and medical issues, and who every species is helpless without. Like they went into that game ready to put all of their grand ideas out for one final story - but now they don't want it to be the final story. Either that, or EA is insisting it not be the final story.

The only thing that makes sense to me is to bring in more Shepard - but one who will have to deal with difficult political realities. Like Krogan expansion. Someone who might not be able to keep the peace, now that nobody has a threat like the Reapers to unite them.

Whatever the background maybe, I sure hope choosing the race of your character is at the players' discretion.

Some individual who just happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time... Or in the councils(or some other organization) opinion in the right place and right time to get conscripted or locked up to keep the secret if you don't agree to work for them.
Refuse = Critical mission failure.

Could be a person of any species who just happens to walk past some windows on the presidium when terrorist attack happens and the council wants to hush it down.
They will then put you to work as "support staff" for a spectre, who soon after get's killed like Nhilus and you then complete a part of the job on your own. Then for whatever reasons they want/need you to continue.
Maybe a situation like the protean beacon on Edenprime. not the same, but it kind of makes you needed for whatever reason.

And you can play as any species, just pick one, customize the looks and then walk them down the walkway to destiny. Get picked up by C-sec or a spectre who drags you of to the council while they deliver the repport on the accident.

We're told it would be different hero, Shepard super marine has been done. There have been a lot of games with dirty harry like characters. What would be a surprise would be someone who seems to be very, very regular and non special. But forced into a life he/she/it never aspired for.
Gardener, maintenance technician, office drone....

In the end they come to rise above and beyond expectations after recieving some training and experience during inital missions. You get conrad verner like missions at the beginning being used as a decoy and diversion, but as you gain experience and the ranks of the original team thins out you get more and more responsibilities.
Eventualy the team might almost get entierly decimated and you become a veteran of the operation.

I liked being a spectre. I liked being a marine.

I'll like being whatever PC Bioware dreams up. But I'll miss Shepard.
