Dragon Age is a dark fantasy, and sometimes I forget that.

Then I go back and play Origins, and I hear Hespith's poem all over again.

This is the popular choice, but it's a scare that worked really well. I took a break from the game for a couple days after I realized what "in her mouth they spew" meant.

I remember playing DA:O for the first time with my headphone volume up, and Hespith's poem sounded like it was separate from the rest of my sound, so I actually wasn't sure if it was in-game or someone was whispering at me outside the game...had to take my headphones off for a second.

Creepy s***.

Did that work? ^_^

(Just for the record in case people see this post out of context, this post is a joke and not serious in any way)

And I was planning on going to sleep well tonight... :pinched:

I think that next-gen possibilities dictate next-gen priorities :)

Scary moments have to be really scary.
Beautiful moments have to be really beautiful.
Funny moments have to be really funny.
etc.

2014 year AAA games will set new videogame quality standards, and will be remembered as the best ones. BioWare should keep that in mind.

Your priority for next gen is just "amp things up?"

Well.

Don't assume that's universal is all I'll say.

"Just amp things up" is not about "just increasing the sound volume". It's about bringing everything in a game to the much higher quality standards. This is not just about better graphics and sound. This is about using better graphics and sound to create something much more immersive than anything that was made before, no matter what is this game's genre.

Can you imagine truly immersive fantasy game without really scary moments? I can't.

I can.

I suspect that my bar for 'really scary' is different than yours. I found Skyrim immersive but never 'really scary.' For something to be 'really scary' for me, it has to gnaw at my gut. It has to be the sort of experience that gives me nightmares or that I can't play alone at night.

Though this is easier to do with me than it might be for others, most fantasy games don't provide that sort of experience.

I enjoy the tense scenes as well.

Silence can also be a very effective tool. Imagine walking into a dark cavern with a horde of writhing spiders silently descending all around you. Or stalking from behind you after pass...

When I read this I pictured a scripted scene where one of the companions screams and the camera turns just in time to see feet disappearing into a hole in the ceiling. And the companion's health bar goes to zero.  Couple that with whispered comments from the remaining companions (and maybe another companion disappearing) while you search, well, that would scare me.:?

Not sure if DA can scare me at all. As soon as i kill some monster its not "scary" anymore. And the previous games have been full of all kinds of monsters. The Hespith poem was creepy, though.

I think it'll likely enter the terror level of Baldur's Gate 2, but I'm not expecting to be on the edge of my seat.

BioWare has used dark themes and terrifying imagery before, but I wouldn't count on a great scare factor for Dragon Age: Inquisition.

This is the BSN. Someone, somewhere, will find a way to take this out of context xD

Well, honestly, that wasn't good enough level of execution to really scare me. But DA:I will be a next-gen game. BioWare has much more powerful tools at their disposal now. They have everything they need to make scary moments really scary.

Except a reason to.

And to be honest, I didn't really find anything in DA:O "scary" either, if I'm recalling correctly. but that's not an excuse to try to push horror--go play a survival or simple horror game.

To BioWare's credit, the orphanage did creep me out a lot. But that's because I'm a wimp when it comes to the supernatural and kids.

I disagree that "higher quality standards" means "more scary."

That DID give me slight chills, especially the ending, but it was more to do with the subject matter than I was "scared."

What do you mean by scare? They are many types of fear.

For instance, here is a couple things that can be terrifying-in very different ways.
Fear 1
Fear 2

I don't think a game can be scary while being empowering and fantasy is (at least in cRPG form) all about empowering the protagonist. I mean this in the physical, killing monsters sense of power.

When someone records themselves playing it. Most interesting if audio (and even video) of the player is there to provide commentary, IMO.

A Let's Play is how I worked up the nerve to play "The Dark Descent"

I love it.. is like Mystery Science Theater 3000 for games. Funny banter and hilarious coments we all wish we had thought of

A good scary scene sounds good. I found the explanation of the Brood mothers to be especially chilling. I wish Bioware did more with that bit. Like if you had a Femwarden Alistair or the other guys would be looking all concerned for you, or the other way around where you can keep asking Morrigan, Leliana and Wynne if they were okay and such. Really build up the tension.

The Fade does seem to be like the best place for a good does of psychological fear with demons pulling and tugging at the Inquisitor's mind while in the Fade. Like bringing up the choices the Inquisitor has made and having him/her face them but amplified to a great enough.

By the way, there is one more thing to keep in mind on the matter.

What things are really important for creating the scary scene?
 - Execution of the scene.
 - Sound effects.
 - Music.
 - Correct usage of controller's vibration (in case of consoles).

Is that enough? Not actually. We also should keep in mind 3D video. Remember the scene in DA:O where Sloth Demon puts us into sleep for example? It was just a simple scene on regular monitor. But it was completely different experience with virtual helmet. People who've never seen the scene in head-mounted 3D display probably will not understand, and I really suggest them to try.

What I want to say is that BioWare should support 3D in DA:I. Not just make it possible, but support with really great quality and not only on PC. ME3, DA:O, and DA2 were bad examples of 3D support - too many visual glitches. And somehow 3D was supported only for PC in these games, which wasn't good.
