Why do you only get a fraction of the bonuses?

What do you specifically mean when you say bonuses?

I would hope that any kind of rewrite would feature removing the Crucible altogether.

How can you except any better from the writers with limited resources, time, and without hindsight, if we can't even do better with unlimited resources, time, and hindsight?

Well, because they are writers and we are not.

I can't think of any feasible way to defeat the Reapers without a Superweapon, lest I redesign them as well.

Maybe you should try thinking more, then.

I'm too busy. Would you mind thinking for me? Surely you've got something thought up for that scenario?

David, if you're so amazing, please tell us what you'd change on the crucible.

I want to know

Really, though, how would one go about defeating a vastly numerically, technologically, and logistically superior force in a war of attrition without some sort of ace in the hole?

Yes, I think I've established that much. I'm asking specifically what you mean when you say 'bonuses', and why you'd only get a fraction of such from spreading them out across a larger number of teammates.

I know I'd scrap it. I know I have a list of requirements for the nonconventional solution that would replace it. And of course, the conventional victory I would want to have alongside it.

Because you only take two squadmates with you at a time...?

Because if you dump every bonus into two characters and take them everywhere, you'll get the benefits of every bonus everywhere...? Whereas if you spread them out, you'll only get a small fraction of the bonuses on any given mission...?

In fantasy, the answer is far simpler. The gods intervene and/or bless the chosen one.

It's trickier trying to bring in this immense of a threat, and have it be the only brand of immense threat in the setting (i.e. they are the only thing close to god level power).

Of course, you're right, as always.

I just forgot every character had exactly the same stats and powers, is all.

If you want to scrap the crucible you need to give ME2 an actual plot revolving around getting the galaxy ready for the Reapers.

Since the Reapers are the only god like power, I'm not against the Crucible idea in general. It's basically turning their own technology against them - and I guess, it's the effort of countless cycles before you. So it doesn't seem too much like a sudden I Win button. It does seem like an I Win button however for being introduced fairly late in the story. No hints at what the previous cycles struggled with at all, other than the Protheans.

Unfortunately, this is a double-edged sword in this discussion, because any conventional means of defeating the reapers requires the reapers to be nerfed considerably. But then they would be a betrayal of the narrative promise of the reapers steamrolling over the galaxy. You can't win.

And this goes back to me wondering if you know what I'm talking about or not. Did you read the post proposing this idea? The post which specifically said proposed bonuses being much larger but only applying to single characters?

Um, you'd have to do a lot of retconning to make conventional victory work....Or you introduce some really stupid weakness.

I don't think the Reaper threat was ever meant to be a conventional one anyway.
