And just throwing this out there, but putting female qunari in the marketing spotlight would be a great idea, since this is the first time we'll be seeing them at all.

This would be awesome.

At the very least, it would be awesome to see that in a promotional CGI.

This, x10, and then a few more.

BAMF qunari mage playthrough incoming.

If we're going by looks, how do you know they're gay?

Why stop there? can't it be a dwarf female gay Inquisitor? Pretty sure it would make for an excellent marketing campaign.

You do have several really good points here, although i would say that
'We've all seen people argue that it's not done because it's not profitable, but let's be honest, there isn't a big enough sample size to make this assertion because almost no one will take the chance in the first place.'
isnt exactly one of them. The issues with this statment is that from a fiscal (spl?) point of view this isnt a strong argument, basically like saying 'well we dont know it WONT lose us money' which really is a risk that a lot of people dont like.
However there are some few games which have female protagonists without even the choice of male ones tomb raider for instance, and before anyone says the new ones very good and that doesnt over sexualise her.
So i dont think that a female protional character will effect sales, but keep in mind from a sales point of view they're more likely to go with the 'safe' choice.

My main point thought is that I dont really want a 'defult' character at all really. I found it difficult to play as anyone except base Hawke because so much of the promotion saqid he was the main character and that is what he looked like.
I really just hope that they continue with using the character that we've seen so far, someone with a helmet that covers most of their face, whether that be a female or male face.

No, its not the strongest argument, but is as strong as I can make it. To claim that I could say more about the impact of female protagonists on profit would require an enormous sample size that we simply do not have. There are so many variables that affect a game's sales that to draw the conclusion that gender matters would require a much higher proportion of games with female protagonists and enough difference in sales between those two groups so as to create a meaningful correlation.

All the arguments made against using female protagonists in the industry right now are tied up in unproven (and until things change, unfalsifiable) assumptions, and such assumptions should not require contrary evidence in order to be dismissed. Businesses may still want the assurance that evidence would bring, but they have to take the risk to acquire the evidence. An interesting conundrum. Eventually, though, it will change because more companies decide to take a chance on the "less safe" route. Unless, of course, enough people start speaking up to convince them that it's safe...

Why not just not have a default Inquisitor? Have the Inquisitor wear a special Inquisition mask or something and wear robes that hide body shape. Also, just don't have a default option in the character creator. Force the player to actually create their character.

You woudn't reach a wider audience with a pair of boobs. You'd reach the same one as before. I have a sneaking suspicion that you're a white man, by the way. Privilege has a funny way of making one blind to other people's problems.

Privilege? Problems? Oh, good grief.

Mass Effect 3 had female Shepard on one side and male Shepard on the other and I wonder how much that really made a difference in sales. All it seemed to do was garner a bit of attention, but those were mainly from forums and gaming sites, which means if you're partaking of those sites, you most likely already know that you can play both a male or female in Mass Effect.

There is a large multitude of cultures, peoples, races, etc. that aren't represented in video games, whether it be minor roles or major ones. Females are a small portion in the scheme of things and they get better representation than most.

Also, look at what happened to female Shepard. People wanted her to be on the cover, they wanted her to get some attention and she did. In the form of people flipping out over her looks. "Oh, finally female Shepard is on the cover and.......why doesn't she look the way I want her to!!??" Yeah, that went over well and was such healthy representation of female players.

Edit: I like the post above me and think that is a great idea. Have that or just a simply logo, like Skyrim had. It would work for everyone.

I am a woman, but I love badass male protagonist. Can´t play a female in Bioware games because of it.

But honestly, I don´t really care who is default or not. Don´t see the reason why people are so ... opinionated about it, since the game is excactly the same regardless of default gender.

I imagine it is because Bioware has a history of being progressive and inclusive in other aspects of their games. With how women are reprsented, with same-sex issues. And so, many people hope that they would dare challenge the norm of having men on covers of video games yet again.

Why people are so wildly proclaiming that video games with women on the cover won't sell, is a better question.

Yeah, I can see your point. :) people care so much about gender, that it might actually stop some people from buying the game, which is a shame. As long as BW gets its cashflow and can make more awesome games, (yes, I´m one of those rare people who loved DA2) I am happy.

I agree, a female protagonist as promotional figure has great ways for marketing. BW should learn a trick or two from japanese developers like this:
Image IPB
I think the FemInq is a great way to reach a wider audience, so it's two birds with one stone.
Perfect.

Lulz I know those lips and boobs.

Why is this even important if you have the option of selecting your gender?

Default characters don't work espeically well in a game where you can have multiple races with differing Genders.

So if your prefered Inquistor was formed, wouldn't that be discrimanting against a differing personal interptation of the character?

I suggest they leave the Inquistor for the player to make and that be the end of it.

It's just my opinion, but I wish social agendas and political correctness would just stay out of video games.

yes. i agree.

Will agree with this whole-heartedly.    Video games are all about escapism from the reality where this kind of bickering and nonsense takes place. We want to be entertained by a great product, not expect some political or social statement from a company.

:/ ;)
