I PUG platinum all the time. You know what you're getting yourself into when you decide to do it.

I'm not touching that with a bargepole.

QFT, because if you pug Platinum it's very possible that's what it'll turn into if you're not picky in the lobby. It's the main reason why most BSN'ers play Platinum with friends that we know can help carry the load.

Unfortunately, most Platinum lobbies are either glitchers, Rio/Giant campers or relatively inexperienced players who should be playing a lower difficulty.

+1, except GIANT is a great map (GIANT HAZARD for grenades better), no need to camp.

Pugs in platinum are better than gold pugs. Not even pulling your leg. I played pug plat for weeks and didn't have problems

I've had horrible luck with both lately. At least on Gold I can keep them alive long enough to do objectives, Platinum I'll die trying to revive them.

It is only as painful as you let it become. Seriously I just roll with it and what happens happens.

Yeah I get sketchy if one goes down. Not worth it sometimes to try to revive them.

Thanks for the responses, everyone! So it sounds like:
  • yep, it'll be painful
  • just like on Gold, I'll encounter people who ought to be in Silver or even Bronze
  • if I can solo Platinum (gulp) and don't mind hour-long matches it'll be fine
  • it's still worth giving it a shot, just be picky about those lobbies

N7 pugs rock!

Some context - I can't solo Gold but I can clutch waves and tend to score 1 or 2.

I started playing Plat about 4 months ago, and only in Pugs. They mostly went pretty well. No glitchers and good tight teams.

How things have changed! :(

Every time I've tried to pug plat in the last month has been a disaster.  Glitching Destroyers everywhere, and if not the players are so bad they wipe on wave 3.  Plat has become unplayable for me.

I'm not that bothered, as I much prefer Gold anyway B)

It's not that bad. Sometimes the objectives waves can be frustrating, but most games are enjoyable.

Ain't nothing wrong with farming Giant/Rio.

Yes there is.

Giant, no. Rio, yes.

Giant is smooth, faster paced games... A worthy farm. Rio games are longer, with longer objectives, a more lame strategy and no plan B.

I actually despise Rio. I always get overanxious and go to the middle. The long sightlines on that map make it hell with Scions, Primes, even freaking Nemeses become a factor on it.

Giant, FBW, Goddess are all fairly easy to me. If I'm taking someone into Plat that I don't know I'd rather play those set maps because I know we probably can extract. Giant of course has the easiest objectives but FBW is pretty easy as well unless four points pops.

I've never soloed plat and played lots of plat matches 99% of them pugs. That's what gave me a full manifest and i refused to farm for it. I just played to my heart's content, found most pugs to be ok. I did carry my fair share of games though i kicked everyone that didn't fit it, like the usual Scrubbernaut, but it was rarely as bad as some BSN'ers make it look like with their "prepare to solo" comments.

Sometimes i had evenings where i couldn't get a decent lobby, so i just called it a day, but the next day i could enjoy a very fun series of games.

Hell, i've played and still play plat pugs with weapons like the Incisor, GPR, non-host kishock/graal, underpowered kits(femturians, TEng, Vsents) ....etc and it still goes well the vast majority of the time

Just try it, gear up, bring your best kits at first, do your best, insist a little if it's hard, kick the leeches (DO KICK THE BLOODY LEECHES); leave if you can't. No need to ask others.

no hydra? easily defended orb room with 2 convenient ammo boxes and no long sight lines for enemies

Depends on your loadout, map and faction.

I've made the switch from gold to primarily platinum few weeks ago, and for the most part my experience has been positive (I PUG 95% of the time, the last two or three weeks off host).

I am more selective than I would be in a gold lobby, and if I see a game pre-set to Giant/Reapers or Rio/anything I'll leave instantly. When playing off-host I tend to start out with kits that aren't crippled by lag and don't require consumables that I value most, and if the host turns out to be solid I'll usually stick around and try my preferred kits (this backfired on me recently when after a lag free game using the SI I switched to a Novaguard and had to ragequit during wave 2).

Everytime Lakkok enters a room or game with him, he leaves, not sure why :?.

How do you think the trained the N7s? the placed them into pugs; pug a few platuim, solo many waves and before you know it you be more skilled than most of those people(BSNers) who play with people with n7 in the 5-6 degits.

there really isnt anthing that wrong with pug platnuim, sure playing with a squishy chracter can be a nightmare if the whole aggro of the wave is on you but still, sometimes is fun testing your limits and carrying some much less capable players in skill and loadout.

Although rocket glitchers kind of runined plat, if your unlucky and end up in a match, there is a high chance it is going to be a rocket glitching match; because of this most of the good players are mainly found in gold. I blame bioware.

You'd best enjoy Giant and Rio with a side of glacier and hydra.

I still don't see why hazard giant isn't more popular. Vanilla Giant sucks.

A long long time ago a volus and a geth prime went into a box located at the end of rio, the had babies and after many more years you get a juggernut with a healing geth turent; the same thing happened with a volus and a turian, after many generations you get the cannbal vangaurd with a healing biotic focus; the volus is a player, even mated with a human in the box and thus game the n7 female engineer with a healing suply drone. This is why is called the box of shame, because so many atrocities happened here.

I've never understood the popularity of Rio Plat. Sure the box of shame gives an advantage, but objective waves on Rio can be a nightmare.

The central hack of death, the looong escort of doom, etc.

I find the LZ of cowardice on Giant to be much more forgiving :?  The objectives are less harsh, and you have somewhere to run when the s**t hits the fan.

In PC is not really that bad, you grow up a pair and polish your skills. Don't listen to people who says you to go with a broken or OP kit, you shall doing it fine if you just play for fun with your favorite kit and caring less about credits, by the time you will be carrying them without bragging about.

I honestly never knew there was another way to do platinum until I discovered BSN a month or two ago...it blew my mind that people would actually run around the map rather than LZ Giant camp and I box of shamed a couple of times with these two pugs when I first started, but it was so incredibly boring I never did it again.

It's hard when you first start playing and the only people that you talk to online are people who talk about platinum as if it is impossible. You have to play with people who are better than you in order to realize that it can be done.

I still don't pug platinum by myself, must have at least +1 friend before I will consider it.
