Except I had Anders at full Friendship at mid-Act 2 even with the initial Rivalry points. It wasn't hard. I don't think I even gave him a gift.

Would you rather the PC be the one to initate romance with the love interest? rather then the companions, (giving room for flexiblity with such characters as Zeveran and isabela) ?
Honestly, I like it both ways; usually my character will initiate the romance, but I have played characters in the past that simply would not be the first ones to act, for various reasons, and it was nice to be able to respond to an advance without initiating it myself. I mean, worst case scenario, someone hits on my character who s/he isn't interested in, and I turn them down.

Ohmigod, 10 Rivalry points! That initial rejection of his flirting tainted your relationship with Anders forever!

Exactly. Though I did give him a gift of a Murder Knife in the end. But we were full friends at the time!

That wasn't a gripe of DA:O though. Sure some people wished they could've romanced Morrigan as a woman and Alistair as a man but that was more wishful thinking than actual complaints. I've seen more complaints about the player sexuality of the companions than any kind of wishful thinking we saw in DA:O.Ailith430 wrote...

In my opinion, this is mostly a good thing, because it opens up as many possible romances to the player as possible, without having to restrict anyone by means of "Oh well sorry you can't romance that lady/dude, they're gay/straight and you happen to be the wrong gender." That would only ****** people off and the Devs would never hear the end of it on the forums.
Right, but honestly I think the backlash from people being actively locked out of specific romances, versus the backlash they get from people who complain that they have too many choices would be very different.
I don't think it would make sense for Bioware to include choices to the player like that and then just take it away. That would be the big difference between this and DAO, people weren't complaining about it in DAO because it was never an option before. Romances are already optional, so if someone chooses to persue a romance in a video game, why not let them have it? Because it's not realistic? Neither are dragons or magic. If we wanted to play something realistic, we could play a game where the default character setting makes you unattractive and everyone turns you down, but that would just depress people and no one would like it, lol.

He had an itchy back. I scratched it really hard with my dagger.

The really tricky part was getting to full friendship with Anders and Fenris.

Romance threads keep popping up every day, and it's the same stuff being said, same topics being touched on, same issues discussed, no matter how you paint it. And because they keep popping up with the SAME stuff posted and talked about over and over, it gives people who like the Romance aspect of DA or ME games a bad name.
Yes, you have a point. But then again, so does everyone. It has already been stated that this time around the Inquisitor will have to initiate the romance, so give it a shot. If you end up hating it and prefer the full come-ons that the likes of DA2 Anders had, cool, to each his own; we should definitely bring up points you feel would improve whatever game comes after DAI... since the decision and romance structure for DAI has already been made.

I guess I was the only one who LIKED that some of my companions took the initiative to try to romance my Hawke. I was fine turning them down when I needed to. Oh, well...

From comments i got it felt prudent to change this topic to more of a question.

i don't care - at least if i can turn down unwanted attention/crushes and lovers without sounding like a total ass (and without closing off the romance part fully, after turning them down once)
it has to fit the character - IMHO someone like Isabela, Leliana or Morrigan needs to be able to be forthright with the player-character (at least if you don't take the iniative!), it's a thing of personality (like in RL - you have those who "hunt" and those who don't (prey?
another example:
it would be awkward for say Alistair to initiate a romance (he has not much of a clue when it comes to that) - at least by speaking to you...he might give you signs or give you a thoughtfull gift (in order to get you to do it) but he would not outright say that he likes you IMHO (it clashes with who he is and how he was raised etc.)

People I don't want to have sex with flirt with me all the time. Depending on how nice they are about it, I'll say "No thanks" or "I'm married." Sometimes, no matter how gentle the rejection, their feelings get hurt. The same thing happens to every woman I know. Accept it as a compliment and move on.
The only flirting that bothered me in DA2 was when Hawke flirted with Isabela without the player's consent. When it was in the demo, I almost cancelled my preorder over it, but I decided that if it bothered me that much in the future, I could just ignore Isabela in the bar and the occasion would never arise again. Eventually, I learned to love Isabela and have created several Isabela-romancing Hawkes, but that involuntary flirt still bothers me every single time.
TL;DR: We can't control the actions or the feelings of non-player characters. We should be able to control the actions and the feelings of the protagonist.

involuntary flirt with Izzy? - that's one of the few times something like that didn't bother me, because i guess, no strings attached flirting etc. fits right with her character (doing the same with most other LIs (except maybe Zevran) would be bad IMHO, because with them i would feel like hurting THEIR FEELINGS, if i broke it off later - with Isabela that's not the case IMHO...she is more easy going with that because of her past I'd say)
