DA:O dealt with religion splendidly. Just like any other type of mythos it created a believable world and in that believable world the supernatural was common place. The justification given for things like magic, and monsters and many other forms of the usual tied in heavily with "The Maker." Even the players own involvement with the fighting of spirits and demons, traveling into the fade, hearing the prophet words of the Guardian all activities would loose a sense of believability if they were not explained like they were in DA:O.

Taking the route of Atheism in the DA:O universe is foolish, given your characters direct empirical findings during his quest.(Even morrigan during the Ashes of Andraste quest is taken back by the discovery of this prophets remains.)

Making a religion believable in Mass Effect however seems more difficult. Considering the Atheists would like the reasons for these beliefs to have some form of substantiation. If they do not then there followers should not be dipictated as such. But in doing so would cause the religious among us to feel slighted and misunderstood.

In a universe of magic, everyone loves religion

In a universe of Science, everyone hates everyone.

Of course not. Magic means God is useless, as the only thing you "need" God for (explaining things that are not scientifically explainable) can be fulfilled by magic.

Of course not. Only if you are free from religious commands like "Love your enemies" you can really love others. If you are forced to love even those you hate, because your god says so, then it´s not true love but self-deceit.

I think it is fine, and I enjoyed Ashley's religious beliefs. I'm a Christian myself. I think religion and sexuality work best in games when it is optional part of the story and not mandatory. Seems to me when Ash brings up her Faith you can cut her off and she doesn't continue it any more. Same with relationships in ME1. As long as religion is handled in a reasonable manner, and the character is not the equivalent of a TV evangelist I am fine with it.

A question to all Christians here: What exactly does God mean in your life?

I´m really intereested in that because yesterday I talked with a girl from my school, she got pissed when I said something about religion and claimed to be a devout Catholic, but failed to answer this question.

I don´t see how you can be religious but not even know what God means to you.

(It was actually good she didn´t answer, because she is quite intelligent and nice, so if she HAD answered, this would have proven my theory that religious people are stupid wrong :-p

Now I can hold unto it, but I´d like to give you a chance to prove me wrong^^)

Tirigon,

In a universe of magic, everyone loves religion

In a universe of Science, everyone hates everyone.

When creating mythos, which is what this entire conversation is about religion works wonderfully when the fruits of your characters faith can be measured. ie The Maker, andraste and magic.

In the universe of mass effect faith without satisfaction makes religion seem tatted on and unsubstantiated.

We've all read the same things you've read, this conversation is about Artistic expression and the concept of religions place within it.

If you wish the conversation to degrade into who can cite the most christopher hitchen blurbs then so be it. Although I can cite more. Tee Hee

As long as games still pay tribute to the glory of the Great Om what does it matter?

Because what gods need is belief, and what humans want is gods.

Religion in the Mass Effect universe would not seem any more old-fashioned and out of place than it does in the real world.

That might be, I wouldn´t know as I don´t know a Christopher Hitchen.

Since this has degenerated into a religious discussion and not a discussion of Mass Effect, it gets closed. This is why we can't have nice things, people.

End of line.
