Some info from the Barnes & Noble website:

Release Date: April 8th 2014
Pages: 416

Description:

Adversity reigns supreme in the fourth novel tie-in to the triple-platinum Dragon Age fantasy game. In the past, Orlais' Empress Celene has held her power with subtle intrigue and wise alliances, but now that synergy is unraveling. Bria, her closest ally, has made a pact with Gaspard, Celene's most adept political rival. To survive and save the kingdom, the empress must take extreme measures.

It seems her elven lover does in fact betray her (they misspelled her name, Bria instead of Briala) and makes a pact with Gaspard, I'm thinking the elves get something out of this deal as it strongly points to Dalish/City elves involvement in the Orlesian civil war...

Let's not forget this sentence from the original synopsis:

Alliances are forged and promises broken as Celene and Gaspard battle for the throne of Orlais, but in the end, the elves who hide in the forests or starve in the alienages may decide the fate of the masked empire.

what do you guys think?

If the elves sought that sort of war, they'd end up going the way of griffons.

If the deal with Gaspard involves getting the elves' support in the civil war, and he comes out on top... that would create new power dynamics, kinda like after the elves fought Tevinter with Andraste.

So, if Celene is the protagonist trying to save the empire, does that makes the elves the villains?

I'm replaying dragon age origins and for the first time I have done the fourth summoning in the circle Mage quest. It's a codex of foreshadow. Alot of that seems to fit in this next game possibly. In it it says something (sorry at work) about the return of arlathan. Maybe that's what the elves will be fighting for.
( The other sentence fragments are about ferelden and Orlais, the fade and the terrible twos) I think there is one more but I forget. I thought it pretty cool at the time when I finished that little side quest.

The description seems to paint that picture yes. However, if that description isn't official (and I mean word for word official) then maybe we're getting the wrong picture.

If it's true though, that would make for a very interesting twist of events! :)

This one?

In time, the human empires will crumble. We have seen it happen countless times. Until then, we wait, we keep to the wild border lands, we raise halla and build aravels and present a moving target to the humans around us. We try to keep hold of the old ways, to relearn what was forgotten.--Gisharel, Keeper of the Ralaferin Clan

@ViSeirA no not that one. (though that is a pretty cool quote!) it's a bunch of sentence fragments unlocked after the fourth summon. I will check what it is when I get home. Just thought it might of shed light as to what my be the elves motivation in the book and eventually the game.

It would be...interesting to watch the writers trying to get people from these forums to side with the orlesians against the elves.

They did. Twice. For all the good it did them.

They only sought it once, when they fought with Andraste against Tevinter... Arlathan was in self defense and the Dales is pretty debatable.

I hope elves play a more prominent and important role in DAI than in the past two games.

Bioware always ruins lesbian relationships. It seems all but canon by this point. My impression is not a good one.
