Did you play Awakening? Virtually every M/F relationship in that expansion that's the focus of a sidequest ends horribly.

Hell, not just one but TWO of them end with the male partner committing suicide.

But there're straight so it's fine.

Are we really going to start this again?

Yes, yes they are. Maybe you should start drinkning again :P

Bioware always ruins lesbian relationships. It seems all but canon by this point. My impression is not a good one.

That's because Bioware knows there's no such thing a lsebianism, hence all "lesbian" romances are doomed to fail as they're actually straight women, but are confused without a man.

I don't have nearly enough alcohol :D. But back on topic, I am interested to see how the elves plight in Orlais is so bad that they would become desperate enough to side with Gaspard.

Stupid posts get stupid replies. And nope I don't think I will, I might decide to stay if the thread entertains me.

I, unfortunately, can't comment on the topic much since I haven't read any of the books. This one seems interesting though.

Read Asunder. Do it now. No arguments. It is a great read, and from some of the stuff going on in Asunder, it happens about the same time as Masked Empire. AND, Asunder is a perfect tie-in to DAI.

So why are people worried about something so small compared to the actual plot of the book?

Irrelevant. Several within the series can work out well.

But it's not irrelevant. If only a small portion of the relationships in Dragon Age are between women - and honestly, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Branka/Hespith - and nine out of 10 relationships in the series end in tragedy, then in all likelihood the lesbian relationship would be among those doomed to fail.

Let's say  I lined up nine Coke cans and one Pepsi can on a fence and then shot nine of them for target practice, leaving only a Coke can standing. Would you then say I had an irrational hatred of Pepsi because I shot 100 per cent of the Pepsi cans?

I'd call you rather careless if actually maintaining intact Pepsi cans mattered to anyone. Which it does, hence it's what Bioware is.

An Elven Resurgence would certainly make the civil war a bit more interesting but its a bit odd considering Gaspard is classic Orlaisian.

The man is a chevalier the very reason he is pushing for new management is because he views the current path of the empire is pushing away from its roots.

This is a massive social reform; But that said it ultimately only makes me slightly curious into the motivations of this assuming this speculation is current.

OK, I get wanting to see positive examples of a lesbian or any other type of relationship but there's a right and a wrong place to look for them or reasonably expect to see one. I once saw a complaint about how it was unfair that the LGBT community wasn't getting a happy ending on Tila Tequila's old reality show "A shot at love."

Whatever happens to Celene and her elven lover doesn't need to have any bearing on the general trend Bioware has towards lesbian relationships. There haven't been all that many examples and many other relationships also end badly. Sometimes relationships are there to serve the overall plot.

It's not exactly something that would seem at first glace to be the stablest and healthiest possible relationship if it's between the Empress of Orlais and her elf spymaster. And I mean really at this point we know almost nothing about either of them on a personal level. Objecting to the loss of their love seems unfair while barely knowing anything about the individual merits of the relationship.

Regarding the elves, it's possible Gaspard may plan to disregard any deal he may make with the elves if he objection to Celene's policy is that she's too diplomatic, but I feel like that would make the conflict less interesting.

Wait Celene is gay now? When did that happen?

Whatever. In any event, I hope it's good. And by "good" I don't just mean "good for a video game tie-in."

I thought Asunder was okay. Compared to the Stolen Throne and the Calling it was high literature, though. Those books were just poorly written.

None do. The Warden explicitly vanishes without Leliana, and Hawke is heavily implied to do the same. There's a ray of potential there, maybe, but I wouldn't trust it too far.

Gaspard is just an opportunist. In Asunder, he tried to "recruit" mages to his cause. He's probably thinking of backstabbing the Elves once he doesn't need them anymore and right now from what we know of Masked Empire  (and Asunder hints), he used the elves to get Celene out of Val-Royaux and ambush her.

I will not judge or offer opinion on his motivations when we literally only have a blurb to go by.

Neither will i offer speculation on a subject that has yet to even be placed within the canon, the civil war is ongoing and we know both factions and their leaders. Thats all that is confirmed and that is all i am aware of; I could come up with any number of theories of the WHY of the war, but that isn't up to me.

But i will acknowledge it is likely he made some sort of alliance with some elves, If so i would tell him to watch his back.

Elves aren't to be trusted.

Thanks for derailing the topic with already argued to death trivia, everybody~! :D

The book seems to be quite interesting as a setup for the background of DA:I. We haven't been formally introduced to Orlais yet, have we?
