It's amusing to me that the Dalish Origin, the least liked Origin, is probably the most important one

Dalish origin is my favourite and only.
And I'm glad it is so important, damn, even the default DA:O story is about a Dalish girl :3

My favourite will always be the city elf. Something about the humble story of a boy who's really a no one, becoming a hero and being able to give back to his people, it resonated with my wanting to help people in my life too. You know, minus the slavery and all that. :P

I presumed that it was the Martyr they were carrying forward as well, possibly because it was the 'cleanest' of the prebuilts you could bring into DA2. I don't know that it can be claimed the Dalish origin is the 'most important'. My understanding was, the events of ALL the origin stories took place, irrespective of whether or not the player chose that origin. I suppose you could argue that the Dalish clan the Warden could have come from was camped around an area important to a long term story arc for Thedas, but beyond that....they had to choose one Origin as being something they could carry forward in the event of an entirely new player coming in to Inquisition.

Pretty much this. They picked three and it just so happened that only one involved the hero dying in a setting where the hero was a complete character creation; nothing about them with the exception of their last name, family, and where they were from was set in stone, so Bioware couldn't well write about their adventures and they realized somewhere along the line that it would get awkward writing about other people when the guy who ended the Blight is still walking around.

City elf was my personal favorite.

Did BW ever release data about what the most popular characters were?

Well, they've said several times in da2 forum that by far the most common race played was human (whether noble or Mage I can't recall) and then there was a big drop to elven Mage and an even bigger drop to whatever was next.

Dwarf playthroughs (whether completed or not) were minuscule in number by comparison. Apparently.
