All the games are flawed, and different people have different tolerance levels for each flaw.

Indeed, I can tolerate MEs weak gameplay because it's writing and ME3s weak writing because of it's strong gameplay. I don't see any appeal in ME2 as both aspects are extreamly weak imo.

No.

YES.

ME1 was cool, but it was ME2 that Mass Effect became the generation defining franchise that we know.

Abysmal continuity, lack of basic TPS mechanics until the third title and it's entire trilogy being outclasssed by single titles in the choice department makes it a "generation defining franchise"? No.

3 at least manages to have functional TPS gameplay and a plot that's relevant to the overarching story; 2 is just a poor man's Gears clone with dialogue options and a barely there plot that advances nothing.

For all the stuff I love about ME2, I enjoy replaying ME3 more. The DLC's are a pretty big factor, though. There are some things about ME2 that don't hold up well to replaying, like its intro. Shepard's death puts a hamper on the game.

I find replaying ME2 is a chore until Horizon. I HATE re-doing Mordin's and Garrus' recruitment missions. It just feels like the handcuffs get removed and I can do what I want at that point. For ME3, the 'annoying' part for me is all the Citadel errands you get in the first act. Because of my gamer OCD I can't ignore them (Jondom Bau, Aria's merc errands, etc) but I'm always relieved when they are done. I like to get Omega out of the way before finishing Tuchanka. After the genophage is resolved one way or the other, I feel relieved as well.

I don't like Mordin's mission all that much but the Space Batman recruitment was the bomb diggity. Talking to the merc leaders right before backstabbing them was pretty awesome.

I agree, most of the early recruit missions were not boring or tedious at all (which is in sharp contrast with ME 3's intro and the countless side "fetch quests"). What worked so well in ME 2  was the fact that many of the exploration and loyalty missions didnt necessary involve a bunch of random shooting violence. Using your puzzle solving skills aswell as a decent number of dialogue options for nearly every major ecounter made the game more than just a mindless shoot 'em up  fest.

ME2 certainly had flaws but not the sort to really, really ****** me off, unlike ME3. Even though ME3 had the highlight of the series (Tuchanka) it simply stooped to lows that nothing else reached. It's certainly true that plot-wise ME2 was a complete disaster but the plot had little to do with Mass Effect's appeal and was always its weakest area. It also had the advantage of being able to move on from its stupid moments, always a big bonus - which is why ME3's opening doesn't get talked about anywhere near as much as its ending, despite being at about the same level.

Considering that you seem to hate all 3 games, is there a particular reason why you're on these boards?

I like ME and enjoy playing ME3. Biggest assumption fail I have ever ever ever seen.

Also my swag is legendary.

ME1 has the best story. ME3 has a good story and best gameplay. ME2 has neither

If the ME series died at ME2, it's because ME2 took it out and put a bullet to it's head.

Pitiful carryover, minimal forward planning, a complete lack of progress on the overarching trilogy plot, a central plot that barely works as a framing device for a host of unconnected characters, and a thematic incoherence with the rest of the trilogy that gave unreasonable and unrealistic expectations to the players who weren't aware?

ME2 might have made a good spin-off game, but it was the worst thing to happen to the trilogy as a trilogy.

I liked the game mechanics of ME3 better than ME2. I felt ME2 had little to do with the story. Like it was a distraction from the main theme. ME3 got back on track and it sure had some great missions, but these, along with ME1 and ME2, had little to no connection to the ending. It was like the ending was created by team who forgot to read the script of the rest of the game.

ME3 is good in it's own right, but I think it's too grand/epic in scope compared to the others. I think it tries to pull off too much for a TPS, small squad shooter. I think Shepard moves in a ridiculous direction from a fairly lowkey, if not successful, commando to a person who is solving age old conflicts far too quickly. The stories of ME1 and ME2 fit well with the kind of tactics Commander Shepard engaged in (rescuing places like Feros, doing the loyalty missions in 2, etc), but the Quarian war was too much. So I think it was getting stupid well before the end.

People like this stuff because it plays into power fantasies.. Shepard affects the universe in ways that were previously unimagined before. I don't like it.

Mass Effect 2 was hella fun tbh. It was the main plot that left a lot to be desired. As a standalone game, it's probably the best of the three. Unfortunately, it is not.
