Not so long ago I stumbled on a Kickstarter for science fiction RPG. There aren't nearly enough of them in my opinion, so I think BSN deserves a look at it.
Ambrov X
Anyway:
The Developer: Ambrov X is being developed by a small to mid sized studio called Loreful. Bringing AAA game design experience to the team is Lead Game Designer Ben Steel, who was the Event Designer on Guild Wars 2. Former Bioware writer Jennifer Hepler is consulting on the story and will be hired as Lead Writer should the Kickstarter reach its first stretch goal.
What Does Ambrov X Mean?: In the Sime~Gen universe, in which the game takes place, Ambrov means 'belonging to the Household of'. A Household is an organization of Simes and Gens, the two subspecies of humanity, that have learned to seek a common goal. Each has its own goals. Household Zeor is dedicated to the unification of all mankind. Household Dar trains its members as warrior monks. Household X is dedicated to expanding the borders of humanities knowledge of the universe. That's where you come in.
The Player Character: Ambrov X allows the player to customize their gender, appearance, body type, and whether they are Sime or Gen. They then have the opportunity to choose between four character classes. The Agent is an expert of espianoge and firearms. The Monk has mastered the physical combat techniques of Household Dar. The Endowed is a psychic with terrifying psionic abilities and the Sentinel is a future knight armed with a advanced armor, a personal energy shield and a plasma edged blade.
The Paradigm System: Ambrov X rejects the use of a binary morality system. Instead it uses their own Paradigm system so the character can decide between mission approaches. The Military approach is fairly self explanatory, referring both to covert military action and outright attack. Mass Effect fans will be used to that. The Scientific approach will focus on gathering data and understanding of the situation. The Diplomatic approach will focus on striking bargains and resolving a matter peacefully. The Philosophical approach will focus on big somewhat existential questions but the devs haven't yet explained how this might translate into missions. There is no benefit to sticking to a single approach consistently, so the player is free to make decisions as the situation demands.
The Universe: Ambrov X takes place in the fictional Sime~Gen universe, a universe that was created in the 70s and has twelve published novels to its name. In this universe, an ambiguous event in the past caused humanity to split between two subspecies, Sime and Gen. Simes are strong, fast, and have the ability to sense emotions in other Simes and Gens, but they are utterly dependent for survival on selyn, an energy produced only in Gen bodies. Transfers of selyn between them, if the Gen is afraid, are often fatal for Gens. The resulting wars between starving Simes and terrified Gens destroyed civilization and it was only thousands of years later that they managed to rebuild and achieve unity (In fact they now count the year from Unity 0). Now they reach beyond the Earth for the stars.
The Story: The year is 310 Unity, and you lead the Unity One, an exploratory vessel assigned the mission of placing beacons for FTL travel so humanity can expand safely beyond their own solar system. That's the official story. Your true mission is to discover the fate of Jumper 10, another exploratory vessel, which returned with only a single survivor. Your search takes you to a strange derelict alien space station. Beyond that, the devs at Loreful haven't said anything, but its been described as a First Contact story.

This looks nice. Pity there aren't many backers.

Even if the Kickstarter doesn't work, Loreful says they'll pursue other avenues of funding. A PayPal donation campaign has been mentioned.OdanUrr wrote...

An interesting looking game. While I'm always cautious about backing anything on Kickstarter I'll at least be keeping an eye on it to see what happens. What they have there looks pretty good, and they do at the very least acknowledge that this is a very ambitious project.
I feel like we need more games which offer a more diplomatic way to resolve things.
Having the 2 player co-op would be awesome, although if they're struggling to get 500k then I really doubt we'll be seeing 2.5 million.

Well, it sounded familiar... like, from the three threads in different forums about the same topic that you created or responded to already, lol.Lord Aesir wrote...

The 2mil goal game I'd be interested in. If it gets some momentum I'll probably consider it.

Backed it but it seems to be going nowhere fast.

Interesting. If I get some extra spending money I am likely to send it to them.
