I'm not really sure, but was Cailain smiling at that Ogre before it crushed him like a grape? He didn't even really struggle - He made one shake that looked more like a twitch before the Orge roared in his face. Was he accepting of death or what?
Was Cailan....smiling?

Well, when the ogre grabbed him, his two choices were die panicked or die smiling. He's not a PC, he can't live through that.

I've always given Cailan props for going out with a smile. Fool as he was before (and during) the battle, to stare your killer in the eyes and simply smile as you're facing your death is going out with a massive amount of dignity.
It's one of the few badass moments for Cailan.
...might be the ONLY one, come to think of it.

I thought it was more of Cailan laughing to himself and thinking, "Man I've really done f***** up now, huh?"

Where is this smile you speak of? I just watched the cutscene a bit ago and he looked (and sounded) anything but happy to get crushed to death.

Yeah, I gotta side with greengoron. That's a look of terror, not a smile.

It was custom to give soldiers booze before battle as late as 200 years ago,
it was not uncommon to be drunk during a pitched battle

I meant before the ogre roared and he looked terrified: When the ogre first grabbed him and stared him down I swear he smiled and nudged his shoulder.

He might have been so drunk so he thought it was a female elven servant nudging his shoulder

I would chalk that up to DA:O's not-so-good facial animations. I love the game itself to bits... just not its disproportionate head and body models and the stiff and awkward animations for them.

It couldn't have been that hard to make him frown, could it? Hell, they made the Warden frown in supposed grief during the joining when Jory died, so it seems like they made Cailan smirk on purpose.

Well, both humans and apes have been known to smile as an involuntary reaction when utterly terrified, so there's that?

Before the thing shrieked in his face, Cailan was smiling.

You're drunk! I just watched that scene. He's gritting his teeth, not smiling. The animation is just a bit off.

I agree. It's more a grimace of pain than a smile.thats1evildude wrote...
