I couldn't find any announcement about Mass Effect 2 going gold, a.k.a. being approved for release to manufacture.  Looks like there was some sort of Twitter post about this by a BioWare producer back in late December but looks like that post was quickly deleted.  So, with a week left until the game is scheduled to be on store shelves and available for download I'm just wondering if we're going to get an official "ME2 has gone gold" announcement.

Handheld thinks the game is about a week away so handheld using his immense logic skills and brain power has ascertained that the game has been gold for a while and was announced on the other site.

If the game wasn't gold by now, I would be seriously concerned, man.

Yeah, this. It doesn't take immense logic skills to conclude that the game is a week away, so it's PROBABLY gold by now. :pinched:

Hey, I saw the other "Going Gold" topic on the old forums and had a simple question regarding this...

What does "Going Gold" mean??? (Probably a stupid question, but I'd rather ask and look stupid than continue to be stupid regarding this phrase.)

Another gold thread? why are people so hung up on games 'going gold'...its an arcaic and outdated term now, the game is finished, made done dusted goodbye thanks for the memories.

when Bioware/EA announce it, its nothing more than semantics in this day and age.

dtye,

it used to mean (in the old days) that the master disc has finally been pressed and is ready for distribution for copies to be made.

Hey, if anybody can post a link to the official "ME2 gone gold" announcement then by all means please do. It's been a busy month for me and I haven't had a whole lot of time to check on ME2's development status. If not then I hope you recognize that my original question has gone unanswered...

Handheld already explained this to you but handheld hears a slight whooshing sound over your head.

No, it has been answered.

The idea of a company announcing when a game has "gone gold" is an outdated practice.  In reality, there is almost certainly no single date that could be
given.  There is no master disk. Delivery media production starts before the final images are built.  The images for PC and XBox almost certainly finished on different days, probably weeks apart.  In the case of the XBox game, Bioware would have produced a QA disk months ago in order to pass Microsoft's QA.  The game couldn't be considered "gold" until it passed that QA, but at that point, Bioware was finished with it for quite some time.  So, Bioware probably doesn't even know the day it "went gold".  They don't care.  It has no meaning.

This is what people are trying to tell you.  The days of the "golden master" are gone.  AAA games pass by this formerly-important-but-now-meaningless day without any pause at all.  For multiplatform games, it has even less meaning, as different platforms need to be ready with different lead times on release.

If it matters to you, there are reports from some stores that they've already received their shipments.  Assuming they are true, this is the best confirmation you're going to get beyond simply trusting Bioware.

I wish handheld would have paid attention to my original post, and is the very Twitter post that the thread handheld provided a link to was started for.

Really?  That is quite curious as the last BioWare game release got a "gone gold" press release.  I guess the practice must have been retired since last October 23.

Well they didn't announce it for Mass Effect 2 but it must be gold by now since the game launches in less than a week.

A clear sign a game went gold is also when they reviewers have copies to review, they don't usually get them till the game goes gold or just shortly before it goes gold.

It did. I think they meant to make an announcement for it but forgot. Chris a couple weeks later stated the game went gold in a thread just like this.

Yes, ME2 has gone gold. Something that Splinter Cell Conviction wont ever achieve.

Thanks to ExarKun00720 and Jerryk72 for the links.  I guess no "gone gold" press release for ME2 but Mr. Priestly confirming ME2 is golden works just as well for me.  In the end the only thing that I really care about is getting my hands on ME2 next week.:D
