Other than being able to see it in the fade.Moghedia wrote...
The Old God Dumat lied, for what reason I dont know... But I think he had something invested in the attempt to breach the golden city.
btw Dumat is also supposed to have taught the Magisters blood magic so the magisters had no reason to doubt him....
We don't actually know if that's how they learned blood magic, because that's from the Chant. We know it in the same way as we The Maker is real, which is to say it's questionable.
We do know that the Magisters did not expect it to be black, however. We have a second source on that. Which means at the very least it must have been percieved to be something else for quite some time, as it's a recognisable landmark.

Whatever the purpose of the OGB, it's inconsequential to the main plot of Inquisition or any further Dragon Age games because it's completely optional in Origins, unless they retcon it to be full canon or find some work-around by where Morrigan makes an OGB by other means if you don't give her one in Origins.

Your right Ziggeh, Corypheus implies that it was supposed to be golden but it was black when they arrived...
again I dont think Corypheus has any reason to lie, besides he seems to take a few moments to become lucid to his surroundings...
