Some sort of slavery exists in any society. Tevinter is just one of the many examples.

You are bound by society rules.
You are bound by employment contracts.
Government always keeps an eye on you.
You have to pay tribute (taxes, fees).

None of that is indicative of slavery.

He seems to be under the impression that paying taxes is a form slavery, while it's only a form compromise. I have to pay taxes so that I can have decent services in return.

Breaking news Seival: drop the philosophical mumbo-jumbo, 'cause you you're not making sense.

Why does the OP assume that I want to be happy?

Maybe I have different priorities, and value my actual will more than my possible happiness; if so, what's the use of any control imposed over me?

You don't want to be happy? If you really think so, then you just delude yourself.

Tevinter slave, controlled by Blood Magic, doesn't sense any restrictions. The slave only thinks that everything goes as it should. And you think the similar way... There are many restrictions that keep your will under control, but you don't even sense these restrictions. You are not free to do anything you might want, and if you forget about that - authorities will remind you.

Seival, you're assuming that the magisters control the mind of their slaves to make them happy and satisfied, which they don't, based on example in-game and in the lore.

Last I checked slaves didn't have rights though.

It looks like you only know a barbaric interpretation of slavery.
Who are the slaves? They are their master's property, correct?

Now think about this. How should some sane person treat his/her property? Obviously, handle the property carefully. Take care of it, so the property will serve you well, and for a long time. Who will buy a computer, for example, just to regularily throw it into dirt to have some fun? Only some psycho.

Seival, slaves aren't necessarily (and I'd say generally) treated well in Tevinter, again, based on the lore and in-game example.

@Sieval: You're talking the attitude of feudalism more than any form of real world slavery that has ever existed (feel free to provide examples otherwise).

What "is" your definition of slavery?  It doesn't seem to be the academic definition, so I am curious.

We know too little about ancient Tevinter. And I hope that BioWare will show it in a positive perspective in DA:I.

Why not qunari then? They tend to control people even better, especially mages.

Yep. You want control - see the Qunari. They know how to handle mages.

From what we know, the Qunari have better healthcare, technology and quality of life than any other nation in Thedas. We haven't seen much of their culture, to be fair, but there is a strong argument to be made there, as well.

Having a gunpowder doesn't make them very advanced. Qunari are still barbarians with ruthless methods of controlling their society. Blood Magic and Magocracy are much more advanced and gentle. That's why I like Tevinter Empire and dislike Qunari.

Barbaric? I'm not sure about that. That's ethnocentrism, you can't judge other cultures from your point of view.

But shouldn't. Judging a culture based on your own is not the best or even a good way to do it.

I can judge them from my point of view, but that will be nothing more than just my point of view.

Like I said many times before, there are no universal ethical rules. But that doesn't mean I can't voice my personal opinion :)

Seival, in Ancient Tevinter they used slaves as batteries and fodder to weaken the veil.

Oh I think we know plenty.

Unless you've been playing a different game than everyone else the DA series has provided plenty of evidence of their atrocities.

A thread about how good would it be if BioWare would show ancient Tevinter Empire in positive perspective. Even through the society is based on slavery. Also, it would be very nice if the Inquisitor could take some steps to bring the ancient Tevinter back.

It would be something like BioWare did to Geth by introducing the Legion... A good idea, don't you think so?

No, I'm pretty sure any reasonable person would agree that a legal system that arrests rape victims for extra-marital sex is backwards.

Maybe.

But the last time Tevinter was in power they destroyed heaven and created a blight.

Tevinter has rules about freeing slaves and an entire social class based on free slaves (Liberati). The only rights mundanes (normal humans) have over them is that they can join the army, while free slave cannot. Everything else is the same...

Also,we can't really say if they have it worst then the city elves do elsewhere...
