It doesn't matter if he thinks that. What matters is the fact that he's a slave. Which is worse than having free will.

Brainwashing through violence is easy, don't need to be a Magister for that. Years of abuse and good cop- bad-cop strategy will get you there. Same thing happened to those captured US soldiers in Vietnam, they completely turned them, and they did not look very unhappy nor like slaves or people robbed of their free will.
Minds can manipulated easily without magic or ultra-intelligent people, brainwashing with the right methods under the right circumstances is very possible.
So....please report to the next North Korean prison camp for re-education. You will be a very happy slave, oh you will.....
