hello there
i have quite a unique problem it seems, google didn't show any other cases. my cutscenes are all sound. there's no videos being displayed when i watch them. i've already installed RAD gametools codec to try to fix it... didn't work.
does anyone know what other codec packs could fix this? or if i need to do something else to fix it?

All cutscenes or just "certain" cutscenes.

and could you post your videocard specs, along with your processor, and ram amount?

ALL cutscenes... all the prerendered. unlike most others, this includes intro's and ingame prerendered scenes.

specs:

nvidia 9600m GT

2.66 Ghz core 2 duo

4BG ram

i'm guessing a codec broblem, but since the game is using Bink and i already installed that, i'm blank.

Have you been installing something like CCCP video codec pack crap? Probably some retarded DirectShow filter registered itself for BINK/SMACKER files and now intercepts videos played by the game.

Uninstall that bull****. If you really need a codec pack, try ffdshow. It's better, consistent and more stable than CCCP and it has a filtering option to let you select in which apps it should/should not be loaded.

ok, i don't have CCCP. but i'll try ffdshow, thanks.
nope, didn't work... any other suggestions?

any idea how i can manually change that directshow thing to use Bink?

when i play the cutscenes in explorer with bink player it works fine, but in game, it doesn't... what do i do?
this is almost so bad and unique a problem i might need one of the devs to tell me what Codec to use and how to enable the use of it.

Don't know for sure. You would need to uninstall the filter that is automatically taking over the rendering of the video - if that is the actual problem. Basically you shouldn't have a DirectShow BINK filter and/or decoder in your system to begin with. I think that the binkw32.dll that is in your Dragon Age bin_ship folder isn't a DirectShow filter at all really. It probably reads the file directly and draws to the canvas.

It's hard to help you out remotely. COM is basically one big fail so you'd need to check the filter priorities and list out all GUIDs to see which is handing what. It could be anything really as lots of software today that claims to do everything comes with a big payload that installs its own stuff all over the system and messes it up. Nero for instance is a burning app and it comes with like 50 DirectShow filters of its own that fk everything up. Also video editors like Ulead stuff and so on and so forth...Or maybe something is just getting stuck in the pipeline...who knows.

It really could be a lot of things, especially with COM and it's hard to help out over net. Basically, good luck with that and be weary of several hundred megs heavy software in the future.

thanks, just an important thing to note... i've got basically nothing installed. it's a totally fresh install. so we can assume that my game does not seem to like the Binkw32.dll
what can i do? change it for another one?

i changed the Binkw32.DLL for another one... my game raped itself... i'm not loosing my hair over this since i've got my desktop, but it would be very nice to get this running properly on my laptop.

I wasn't suggesting that the bink runtime that shipped with the game isn't valid, it should work out of the box.

And now that you mention it, maybe there is a compatibility issue with a driver or the video hardware with your laptop. Games aren't usually designed to run on laptops, at least not just yet. So that might be your problem. Especially when you mention you're on a fresh install.

It is evident that not only I have the problem. Where is a fix for this, bioware?

There isn't any Bioware presence here, and the symptom is too rare to expect any fix from EA (all official support is EA, exactly as it says on top).

There's hardly anyone here in summer, so to have any chance at getting a gamer to read and answer your question, you have to read all of the stickies and pay attention particularly to Raen's "Read First".

Also, please don't disturb the old graves, especially when there's nothing in the one you chose to dig out.

If there is any reason that you do not find the description of the problem reporting procedure there to suit you:

You can try the plain-text variation that I've written for this forum:

Based on the first three weeks of June, the weekend lasts longer than four days around here when readership is very low, and the forum archives are the only dependable way to get answers to problems.  Fridays through Mondays, everyone is busy doing other things besides reading gaming forum messages.
