Isabela seems more arab, I think.

In DA2, she looks heavily modeled after Salma Hayek (who is part Lebanese Arab).

I don't care.

That said, likely so.

Edit: And Isabella is not black. At all. It's really quite painful for me to see people calling her black, with her shiny hair and smooth cheekbones.

Dark skin does not equal black. The topic is about dark skinned people.

That's a fair point, but I suspect he meant black.

Rivaini are said to range in skin tones from 'dark tan to ebony.' Isabella just happens to be one of the lighter skinned (as in tan) Rivaini.

I agree Isabela is not black. But I would like to point out that having "shiny hair"/ "smooth cheekbones" and being black are not mutually exclusive. I'm not entirely sure what you meant, but being of African decent does not mean you'll have any set qualities, other than (and sometimes not) darker skin pigmentation.

Anyway. I think part of the problem with making characters look non-European was a result of the past engine. Or at least I hope. Also, the Antivans are more Spanish, and less Latin@. Sadly.

I have never seen an (pure) African descendent without coarse hair. Have you?

The potruding cheeckbones is less common, but it is still fairly common--blacks typically have high cheeckbones. Unlike Isabella.

No one's "pure" anymore, technically...

The closest thing to it then, or someone who's descended from black parents for generations back.

Its important to have a ethnically diverse cast, considering there has been war in Thedas, which is always followed by immigration. People of colour need more representation, which is not hard to add to a fictional setting.

I'm more curious as to why you would desire such a setting.

Probably because almost every videogame ever features mainly white people in white settings. It doesn't seem like a weird request to me. People like being represented in their media.

So if you're not a "pure" African descendent, you're not actually black?

Yeah, but only racists are so hardcore and hateful about it. As a w hite eprson I can sit down and enjoy The Cosby Show. It's a great sitcom and the fact that actors are black means nothing to me. Just like I enjoyed Family Ties because I think it is a goods itcom not ebcause they happened to be white actors.

Isabella was one of my two favorite DA2 characters (Varric was my other) and she wasn't the same coloured skin as me.

Just enjoy the game (or not if it sucks). Skin colour should be irrelevant at all times for all people. if it isn't you are a racist. No matter your skin colour. Period.

If you are using the term "black" (which became general usage in the U.S.), then bound up in that term is the one-drop rule, which basically states that a person with one drop of African blood is considered "black."  That person could possess any kind of traits, from ones associated with "white" individuals to any other types.  There is no set of required physical characteristics to be considered "black."  (I have some thoughts on this "rule," defaults, and social constructs, but as Lincoln said, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt.")

Required reading (although there are probably better sources of information out there): www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jefferson/mixed/onedrop.html

On topic, I would love to see options for all sorts of physical characteristics.  Some players like to make their characters in their own image, and I think the choices available should make this possible.

Tell that to the token minority characters.

You're a racist if you want to see representation of your race in a video game?...okay

Actually where I'm from - yes. Black refers to people with very dark skin and I don't think I've ever seen a black person with naturally straight hair. Coloured refers to people of mixed race. They often look "European" with darker skin. I know that in America everyone who is not white gets called POC (except if you're Asian I think and Latino maybe) but you're likely to offend a black person here if you call them coloured and vice versa. Goes to show you how arbitrary and subjective racial classification is.

While I kinda sorta see where you're coming from this only works if the whole world sees things as you do. You can go "but what's the big deal people? It's just your level of melanin!" and you're right, it is, but you're only seeing the situation from the (and yes everyone can sigh and shake their heads ruefully now) priviliged side of the fence. Have you ever been in a situation where everyone around you is a different race? Now imagine that in EVERY SINGLE form of media you look at. It's alienating. It's not racist for to ask someone to acknowledge your existence.

I enjoyed jade Empire just fine despite it having only one scene with a white person and I was playing an Asian. Not once did I think to myself, my god, I rate this game an 8 but if I could be white, I'd give it a 10!

The moment you start judging something/someone based on skin colour that is racism/bigotry. That said, some racism is a lot more 'benign' or 'ess offensive' than others. ie. Asking for a characetr that has the same colour skin as you and implying you won't like the game as much if there isn't is racism but it's not as bad (obviously) as beating someone up because they are a different colour.

Actually, Asians and Latinos still qualify as "people of color" though that term has generally fallen out of favor over here. "Black" generally refers to anyone of at least some African descent, though it's also a self-identifcation thing. I've lived in places where saying someone isn't black when they think they are will get you beat up.
