Is There Any Chance We Could Get the Characters and Romances Forum Re-Opened?

I was wondering if a moderator might consider re-opening the Characters and Romances section of this forum. It's been closed for 11 months, and I'm thinking that might be long enough for the trouble makers to get the point that acting like jerks doesn't end well for anyone.

I would have PMed a moderator, but we can't PM them anymore without being on their Friends List.

Almost certainly not, despite the actual forum board being infinitely better than the group format.

I wish they would, i really do but i know they probably won't.
It's just such a shame. It's almost impossible to get anyone new from the groupe design. When new comers come to the BSN, i very much doubt they'll go looking into groups, if they even know they exist.
It's really a shame.

I think that they should be reopened. I think that the message sent by their closing has been heard, loud and clear.

Certainly not. This forum is for complaining about the ME3 ending and general whining, not showing your appreciation and praise for the games characters and writing.

I feel like the romance & character fans really keep a lot of interest in these games alive. For a company making games featuring such memorable characters, it seems weird to shut down the "Character" forum for so long.

My advice...
1. Friend some mods
2. Send a PM making your case for re-opening that forum
3. ????
4. PROFIT

I don't see why not, honestly. If there are trouble makers or it gets out of hand, close the thread or ban who needs to be.. just like every other area of the forum. Opening it up doesn't mean you'll have to read the posts if it doesn't interest/annoys you. We already have people creating threads or inserting LI debates on here regardless. Might as well give them somewhere to keep it separate.

*snort* it will be a cold day in the EA boardroom before that particular example of a misbegotten spawn is ressurrected. Trust me. No

The Talimancers on that board scared me more than I can ever hope to describe.

Well, that certainly didn't take long. What is being a contrarian hipster like?

Nope. Romance discussions are to be held in the general ME3 forums so that all of us can be enlightened about quarian sweat.

Damn.

Maybe I should just stick to playing their games and not bother talking about them. :\\

It's not like the mods stop us from making threads all about waifus and then fighting in them daily. Why reopen a flamebait section when we can do it right here, right now?

No it won't ever be. The moderators don't want to deal with the constant headache caused by maladjusted individuals with an unhealthy attachment to fictional characters.

Of course if Bioware was better at PR they would realize that the forum should be deleted outright for the sake of their corporate image. You can't stop people from posting perversion like "tali sweat" on tumblr and deviantart but you can certainly get it off your own site.

It doesn't take a genius to realize you might not want your product associated with sexually frustrated weirdos living vicariously through their self-inserts; this obsession with romance has done a lot to make this forum the laughingstock of the Internet and Bioware games viewed as a romance sim masquerading as an RPG.

Yeah, if anything Bioware hasn't gone far enough in cracking down on the romance creeps that tarnish the reputation of it's brand.

Of course, they'd also have to strike at the root cause of the problem and limit the "romance" content in their own games to pre-ME2/DA2 levels.

If it was common practice to close a forum because some of the posters were acting like "weirdos," every sub-forum here would be closed. Just sayin'.

IIRC that forum was locked due to some disagreements on thread joins/splits/being remade etc.

What you guys are talking about were not the par-for-the-course character and romance fans, but some truly fringe "I believe Miranda is my actual girlfriend" people. How does someone saying "Ashley is awesome and my favorite character! Here is some fanart I drew of her" a problem for anyone? It doesn't take a genius to realize that having a dedicated group of fans for your intellectual property is healthy for the bottom line. These are the people who buy the games on multiple platforms, and not only that, but merch.

And devil's advocate, if you're really all "Ugh, I don't like it when other people really like something," wouldn't having a sub-forum for all that liking help you avoid those likers?

It went far beyond being a disagreement and that is why it was removed, the only reason why I think the posts get away with it here right now is the Mass Effect boards population is very small compared to what it was otherwise they would lock those posts and tell people to take it to the groups.

The problem with the group is that it took a lot of moderation and even if there is a little of it that is required for the main boards now its not to the levels that was there for I kept reading notes about "cleaned up some posts, and some timeouts given" multiple times and I highly doubt they posted about it each time, only when it was excessive.  I think if people acted better on all the different forums here they might re-open it, but that is something I highly doubt.

The fringe "tali sweat" elements are only part of the problem. When you have several hundred page threads dedicated to fluff that's only a few minutes long in a 30+ hour game dwarfing more important aspects then you have a serious PR problem on your hands with people getting wrong impressions of the product(if one didn't know any better they'd think ME is a date sim with a combat minigame).

Priestly did the right thing in closing that sewer of a sub-forum(and with banning IT discussion from the main board).

If they hadn't pulled the trigger on that forum a Talimancer would inevitably have turned a Bioware dev into a skin suit and worn him/her to a cosplay event.

It had to be taken out back and shot, it had become an abomination.

Extreme cases aside (I'll take your word for it. I've never read that forum), I don't know how to seperate the romance aspects from the rest of the games. It's all part of one package. And a tool for how you roleplay your own character's standpoint in the game world. The kind of characters you choose to associate with sheds some light on how your view your character in general. Not entirely, but the general idea contributes more than "the few minutes" of content devoted to them. It's a small way to shape what your character cares about or what he/she finds entertaining. Not to say it's the most important roleplaying tool though. Any little thing can contribute to that in an RPG.. place of birth, or gods your character worships in D&D, psyche profile, etc.. Thing is, there isn't much room for that in Mass Effect. This is what sucks about forcing/railroading friendships - it's taking away what little roleplaying tools there are to begin with. You're already railroaded as human, Alliance, the psyche profiles don't matter much, even the renegade/paragon stuff lost a lot of significance in the last game. Not much left but the various means in how you relate to the squad.

This happens quite literally everywhere across video game sites. There's not a single thing on the BSN that does t exist somewhere else. Go on the Bungie boards and skim through the Flood (off-topic) forum. Guarantee you'll find a thread dedicated to Flood hentai.

Hopefully, it seems odd for part of the forum to be closed for such a long time. I wasn't around for what led to the forums being locked but wouldn't banning the people who were causing trouble be better?

People who didn't do anything wrong don't have anywhere to discuss characters/romance now. It's been suggested that fans use groups for these discussions but some people aren't keen on the way groups work and threads end up getting hidden away in groups so it's not easy to get new users involved.

The C&R section would keep character and romance specific threads in one place so that the general and story forums can be used for other things.

The Romance sub-forum was closed as a result of the 2nd Great Waifu War, re-opening it runs the risk of a 3rd Great Waifu War
