I can see fighting something that possesses a magic ability you are not ready or equipped to defeat yet. I can see a scenario where the hero is the only thing between this kind of creature and a town or group that needs time to get away. Depending on how long the hero can hold off this kind of threat might determine the level of damages/losses that will be done to the creature's destination. So your "reward" might be how many people live or die or any other number of things. Holding off impossible odds has always been an exciting and epic point to me.
