It seems like Bioware doesn't want you to play the main tank.  I'm brand new to this game and my main character is a tank.  From what I've read Alistair is hard to get rid of, but 2 tanks is too much for one group and Alistair is definately a tank.

Will I be able to get rid of him and replace him with other classes?

You can be a MT and use Alistair as offtank, why not.

My PC was a sword and board tank as well. I just removed Alistair from the party at the earliest oppertunity. I now roll with:

PC - Tank

Morrigan - pew pew

Wynn - Heal and some pew pew

Leliana - Mage Killer and locksmith.

There is a mod that let's you redo everyone's skills and stats if you want to keep Allistair and be the main tank.

I was thinking of a similar group makeup Akimbo, glad to know you can boot Alistair.

Where do I get this mod nteger?

THanks for the replies

Problem is Alistair is an okay tank but not great. The best possible tank is the PC but that goes the esame with any other class.

I personally like two tanks, one rogue, and one mage. In  a party of four, there is going to be one duplicate as there are only three base classes. However what might be cool is an arcane warrior (PC) , one tank (alistair), mage, rogue. That way you sort of have two warriors and two mages plus the rogue.

I think im going to try arcane warrior next playthrough.

Just replace Alistair with another DPS and you can be the main tank. Bioware isn't stopping you from doing it, just like they aren't stopping you from playing a healing mage despite Wynne being a healer.

I think what people meant was that it was hard to get Alistair to leave your party permanently. (Actually, it's not that it's hard, you just have to wait until late game to do it.) You can leave him at camp no problem, though.

the mod is here: http://social.bioware.com/project/469/

I suggest you click on the "projects" tab at the top of the page because mods make every game better, and bioware is making it really easy for us to make and use them in DAO.

Me - Dual Wield Rogue

Morrigan - Heal and CC

Leliana - DPS Archer

Alistair is a great tank.

If specced properly and with good equipment, hes fantastic. I mean I dont understand some people. I can send Alistair in a crowd of 6+ mobs and have him taunting everything in sight and his health never drops below 80%.

You can also run a MC as a tank and the two of them can feed off each other perfectly.

He may be, but I like playing a tank and in my opinion 2 tanks in this game is one too many.

If you don't want to use him, just leave him in camp, what's the problem?

My guess is that the OP hasn't left Ostagar yet.

I did the same thing as Akimbo and it worked fine through most of the game. This playthrough I'm attempting to tank as a dual wielding warrior.

Basically, as far as durability goes, a tank is about twice as defensively strong as a 2h or DW Warrior, equal to an Arcane Warrior, and 4 times as strong as a Cun Rogue/Mage.

I'm going without a tank on my latest playthrough, no-mage either. Just Shale (38 con, rest strength, pulverizing blows most likely, never used her much though), Sten (2h), PC (2h) and Lel (Dex Archer).

Well thanks for all the responses. It seems that there are many options as far as group makeup and I'm glad to hear it, I'm looking forward to getting deeper into the game and making up my group. I"m quite surprised to hear that people are using off standard groups and even soling and still have success. :)

Again thanks!

I just finished a most excellent "Team Flurry" playthrough with a DW warrior (Berserker/Champion), Alistair as a DW warrior (Templar/Champion) and Leliana/Zev as DW rogues/lockpickers. I used Morrigan for crowd control/healing until Wynne got Haste and then it was on. With Haste+Precise Striking+Momentum and the right swords, Alistair and my PC were unstoppable killing machines. If ever we got overwhelmed, one of us would War Cry and the other would just keep hacking away. It was by far the most fun I've had with the combat in this game.

Shale is a tank, not sure what you mean you dont have a tank if he is in your party?
