I mean we all want our favorite characters to return, but Thedas is a big place with lots of landmass. This game won't cover all of Thedas (probably). Wouldn't it just make such a supposedly large world feel so small if bunches of characters from previous games just appeared.
I, for one, would like to see new characters with new motives, since we are in a different part of Thedas. It's not that I am against returning characters. I love recurring characters. It's just that too many makes the game world feel smaller and filled with few important people.
I just don't want recurring characters to go overboard and saturate the game.
Am I alone in this viewpoint?
Anyone feel like too many reappearing characters would be a bad thing?

I agree. I don't really care to meet and retread plots that I've already solved in the last two games. The biggest disappointment in DAI, IMO, is having to return to Ferelden.

No, I agree. Mostly because past character appearances tend to be "Tee-hee remember me? Good luck, k? Bai." I think just a short reference through dialogue or on a Codex entry is fine.

Nope, I've always felt this way too.
I have to facepalm at people who want all the characters to do a mass migration to wherever the new protagonist is.

It depends.
The characters from previous games who've moved up to be movers and shakers in the worlder- Leliana, Alistair, Sten/Arishok- I think they should appear.
But I don't want to see characters from previous games moving up in the world in ways that don't make sense just to justify them appearing.

For me it's only if it makes sense for them to be there

Hey, remember when you choose not to kill that one guy on that one quest in DA:O??
Well now here he is! Choices and consequences, yeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaah.
It's a big world, it is reasonable to expect that we might not see the same people when we're halfway across the country (How are all these people ending up around Kirkwall?).
When reappearing characters are a contrived effort to show the consequence of a choice or just lame fan service it is probably best if they don't show up at all.

I agree. I wouldn't want to see characters who really have no reason to be there other than fan-service. By the same token, characters who should be there, I'd want to see or at least have their absence explained.

Not at all. As has been said, we've met strong characters who have moved up in life, so to speak, and would make sense for us to interact with. I'm not sure if I have any save imports with Loghain, since I usually sided with Alistair, but as a character I'd love to see more of Loghain and something more than just a token cameo scene.

I agree. I don't want Thedas to feel as small as the Star Wars prequels made the galaxy feel. It was apparently utterly vital that Chewie was one of the Wookies that helped Yoda in the prequels, despite the two characters not meeting or referencing one another in the original trilogy. I could really feel the connection between them, what with their one direct line of dialogue.
If it furthers a worthwhile plot in a meaningful way, sure, have a character show up. But cameos are pointless if all that happens is they show up and remind us they exist, like we're just going to assume that any character not appearing has just vanished.
I'd find references in codexes and dialogue much more interesting than pointless cameos.

It depends entirely on where the story takes us. That said, contrived cameos are a big no.

I'll reserve judgement based on the context, so long as it doesn't fall into the trappings of novelty. I don't much mind being thrown back into Ferelden either, since in DA:O we were exposed to all of 1SQ mile of virtually unexplorable terrain. On those grounds, I dare say Ferelden will be as alien to me as Orlais or the Tevinter Imperium.

Feel the OP jumped the gun.
Seems to be happening with terrible regularity these days. rolls eyes.
There's no indication there will be a bunch of returning characters.
So far we have Varric.
Nothing against Varric but I would rather he not have been a party member, freeing up that spot for someone else.
After that it appears to be all new party members.
Even if Cullen is a party member, and we don't know that for sure, he never been in a party before.
Leliana, Morrigan, possibly Sebastian and some other previous party members or npcs may show up as npcs or agents.
So there woll be several new party members , as well as lots of npcs , agents, allies, and enemies we've never met before .
Not worth getting upset about.

I am okay with them having a role in the game as long as it makes sense. I also hated the cameo appearances (like Zevran) which felt as if they were only there to show that the games are connected. I would also prefer if returning characters weren't party members the second time around. DA2 kind of overloaded me with that since Anders, Isabela, and Merrill were all returning characters. That makes up about 1/3 of the companions. I'd rather get to know new companions in new games. I like the connection between the games so it feels like a fluid world, but the same people being in the party doesn't feel necessary.
So far in DA: I, we know that Varric & Cassandra are both returning and party members. We know that Morrigan and Leliana are returning in some plot related way. We suspect that Cullen is back as either a companion or plot related way. It makes sense to introduce the returning players first since it's a way to get excitement from loyal fans. But with a year remaining still, I'd rather start seeing more about new people. So far, the only new character that we know of for sure is Vivienne.

unless they let us see places we have never been to, like the mage-prison (where the Knight-Commander sent Lilly)
on the whole, i agree, i would exchange visiting Ferelden for a lot of other places (from the Anderfells to Par Vollen (spelling?))
as for characters:
depends firstly on who is the returning character?
is he/she important?
does it make sense for him/her to be here?
meaning - for example:
if i meet Alistair (who is King in my canon!) at the Orlesian Court, then that's ok - if it is however Sten who appears there, then something is clearly wrong (and that's not good IMHO)
on the whole, yes, i would love many many many new characters (just as well writen as the old hands), but i want to see some of the "old" ones again, too (seeing how they are doing and if helping them out got them what they wanted, is something i find very satisfying!)
greetings LAX

You are not alone, the fewer the better and only those that make sense.
And I don't say that because I don't want to see the old guys again.

I know my friends are probably tired of hearing me saying this, but yes, I am SO over having the old characters pop up.
I don't mind having Sandal and Bodahn show up or Wade and Herren (they at least serve a purpose selling us things), but any past companion or important side character from the previous stories should be left alone unless they have real relevance being there.

You know, if there was one cameo in DA2 I couldn't stand, it was King Alistair's. "Hey, how's it going. Just wanted to take some time out of my busy day ruling a nation to sail all the way over here to tell you to keep up the good work. Oh, and get yelled at by a templar lady, because I didn't get enough of that before being recruited into the wardens."
That and the dalish girl and the (maybe) werewolf. That was forced.

I don't and i don't a few characters from the prior adventures returning if they can offer legitimate reasoning for being there as far as my perspective.
Besides most of the time they generally offer insight to the character and speak of what is occurring around the world beyond the sphere we are within.

I feel that they're necessary in order to establish that link between games. Though each game is stand alone, they belong to the same universe and thus, need that connection.
