Yep, one or two characters reappearing to tie the games together is fine. In this case, Varric and Morrigan are plenty.

Its not that I don't love some of the other characters. I could play a whole other game with Merrill at my side again, but it does start to detract from the new story when too many of these old characters show up just for nostalgia sake.

I wouldn't mind a few repeats for companions (Varric, Cullen, Cassandra) but as for the rest, a cameo or reference would be sufficient. Hopefully cameos make sense in the context of the story, and artists do a good job of retaining their look - aging them slightly of course.

I agree completely, I'm sick of everyone's questions to the devs being "IS X CHARACTER COMING BACK OMG!" I hated almost all the cameos in DA2 except for Leliana's, her appearance made total sense to me and it felt believable. Nathaniel felt appropriate as well because the Wardens are clearly up to shady business. I didn't really care for Bodhan and Sandal's appearance because why would they be there? I can accept them however because their more like an Easter Egg now. However I hated almost all the other Cameos, ALL Alistair cameos, Zeveran, those random characters from random quests from DAO, and CULLEN! YES! I DIDNT LIKE CULLEN! Why? because he was absolutely out of character from DAO, he was bat **** crazy and hated mages by the end of DAO. Now suddenly hes all merciful and totally ok for active duty? I don't think so. Also dont even get me started on Anders, he should have never returned in the first place. All of these things felt like they were nothing more than "HEY GUYS REMEMBER ME!?!?!?! HUH HUH??"

I agree there should only be Cameo's when they make sense, and when they have legitimate reasons for being there. Leliana being around makes sense, shes a big time player in the world now, same for Cassandra, who herself is the Hero of Orlais. King Alistair and/or Anora appearing might make sense when in Ferelden, depending on the situation, at the very least letters or something from them. Like-wise Arishok (Sten) appearing would make sense if dealing with Par Vollen. Loghain -might- make sense given the fact he was sent to Montsamard, although I'll never know...I never spare that traitor. (well sometimes, but he dies either way :P) Varric being a party member again? I must admit I am disappointed. Yes Varric was the only Companion in DA2 that I liked, but I don't want repeat party members unless it's like some epic s***storm...like Inquisitor, Warden, Hawke all in the same party battling The Maker to save Thedas. it goes back to the whole "small world" thing. Thedas is huge, but these return appearances make it feel so damn small. Unless Varric can shed some light on the fate of Hawke I fear I'll have little use for him.

Yes.

But how much is too much is the question.

I feel like bioware is depending too much on old characters

^ Indeed, it seems to be the case, seeing as how DA2 went to far as to blatantly ignore the fate of some characters to justify putting them in because "they were necessary for the story". No they weren't Bioware...you just didn't make the effort, I think The Cave is proof enough of that.

I think in all honesty, this is one subject that Bioware should figure out themselves completely. I don't watch the forums all that closely, and don't remember them specifically asking for opinions on this but, I'm just saying. I think characters having cameos, reappearances, or whatever is a touchy thing. You have the obsessed begging for their lives on certain characters to return, and most times it can hurt the story, or the flow of it at least. If Bioware has an idea of who they want to bring back or no, I say let them go with what they have in mind. I think bashing our heads against the wall, and forcing them to bring someone back would just be ridiculous. I'm kind of exaggerating but I see this happening in some form or another. I hated seeing so many people returning in DA: 2, because most of the time it was like "OH REMEMBER THIS PERSON? THEIR BAAAACK" and then their gone 5 minutes later. Now granted the game was spread out over 10 years (which I think was a meh executed idea in itself, but yeah), but it still felt very forced in a lot of cases.

Now with all that being said, I'm all for seeing familiar faces, as long as it flows with the story. I think it would be a lot more impactful if cameos were more rare to find.

A few cameos are fine if they fit the story. Too many appearances break suspension of disbelief and make this supposedly huge world with millions(?) of inhabitants seem just a few miles long and with a population of only a few hundred at most.

I like cameos and reappearances as long as they make sense and don't feel forced. For instance, I like that Varric is now a companion and not some random dwarf rogue we're going to have to get to know again. Following that, many of our companions are important people or became noteworthy by helping stop the Blight, or the qunari invasion, or...Kirkwall. I could at least do with a codex mentioning what they're doing afterward.

depends on the role but given Bioware's standing track record? yes it would be bad

It should be a healthy mixture of new and existing. So yes an unbalance in either direction wouldn't be ideal imo.

This thread kinda makes me LOL there were several threads from couple of months back with ppl making lists and polls and who they would want back as returning characters and now that 2 have been confirmed ppl are complaining about it... oh the irony

No, there's actually alot of people I want to see again.

1.Anora
2.Lohgain
3.Morrigan
4.Isabela
5.Sten (Arishok)
6.Carver
7.Leliana

…the list could go on, add that to the amount of reactivity I'd like to see and we could talk for days, but most of that is probably wishful thinking.

I'm ok with the following things:

1) Varric. Varric is awesome.

2) Minor characters moving up to the big leagues. Merrill, Isabella, and Cassandra.

3) Major characters who are integral to the plot returning. Leliana and Morrigan, presumably.

Things I don't want:

1) ALL companions, or even more than just Varric, returning as companions. Damnit, Anders!

2) Silly, pointless cameos. It would be more interesting to hear the population of NPCs making references to events involving characters from the previous games than to have the previous characters show up and tell you about it like you're old friends. That just seems awkward (Hawkeward?) and contrived.

If its a completely removed side quest related thing, yeah. I don't think it makes sense that you would run into Oghren and he is like "hey inquisitor! I hear you're the guy who can help me take over this brewery!" but if you go into a tavern somewhere and you see Oghren drunk as hell, stumbling around and pissing himself then its totally alright.

But say you're trying to get at a stronghold and Sebastian is around and he is like "You can use my bros if you murder knife every mage within the walls" that's cool by me.
