What should have Shepard dreamed about?

Shepard's actual death should kind of haunt him/her. I mean, getting blown out into space, suffocating to death and falling into a planet's atmosphere should leave some kind of impression. But, then again..."I got better."
Absolutely. I can't believe I missed that on on my list.

Especially when Shepard could have committed much worse crimes personally.David7204 wrote...
It makes little sense for Shepard to suddenly start being torn up over such events in ME 3.
The dreams should have just been scrapped entirely.

It's kind of a shame that the existential crisis that comes with something like the Lazarus project is only touched upon in the second to last mission. It should have occurred to Shepard just how insane this all is and have very pressing concerns over what he/she really is, and whether or not the revived Commander is just a Cerberus imitation. The only one who seems to give you any kind of reliable assurance that Shepard at that point is indeed Shepard is Liara, if you bring her along (not sure how this differs with non-LI dialogue).

I assume you're aware of the cut Ashley dialogue where she asks what dying was like?

Dream 2: event recap of ME2 (suicide mission, etc)
Dream 3: about former squadmates who died during ME3 (Mordin, Legion, etc)
Dream 4: (final dream before Chronos/Earth) Possible failure of the mission, loss of Shepard's LI/Normandy Crew or Squad. (them being turned into reaper ground troops)
The dreams focused too much on that one stupid kid, but I doubt there would have been enough time to do the dreams as I described above. So they should have just been scrapped all together. Also, since ME3 is supposed to be the "perfect jumping in point for new players."

Although I wouldn't want my Shep to dream about some stupid robot that tried to strangle him on Rannoch;)
The dreams should be adapted a lot more to decisions and outcomes of individual playthroughs.

Yeah, that's basically what I was trying to get across. It would have made more sense.

What impression dying/resurrecting has should be left up to the player. Whether they view it as a positive thing that made them cherish life anew and see the world in a new light or a very negative experience that haunts him/her. The notion of the actual moment of physical suffocation being something that could linger could i suppose be used in short sharp nightmare sequences.

If there were an ending that placed more importance on the characters (basically rewriting Earth here), having these voices speaking as you kept fighting forward or regain strength would have neatly summed up your journey. Who you voluntarily sacrificed. Who you killed out of spite. Who died as heroes in their own right. And, in contrast, who is still there by fighting by your side at the end.

The only thing I liked about the dream sequences were the dead squad mate lines. They are so fittingly haunting and really great. Everything else can go..
Thank you. I felt completely on my own saying that earlier. Everyone seems to hate the dreams entirely, but I thought that part was good. I don't think the dreams sucked, in principle. Most of us seem to agree on the kid though.

I hate that child. Nothing is more irritating than listening to him talk at the end, tbh. There was so much that could have been done with those lines, though! My playthroughs usually have most survive so I looked up a YouTube vid with all the lines and they just hit home.

I.E.
Dream 1: You try to help the Virmire victim but instead you personally see the person vaporized.
Dream 2: You remember back at any KIA members on the Suicide Mission; If you took no casualties, you remember that girl getting liquefied alive for her "salvation."
Dream 3: You see a Collector Casket up ahead, you run towards it, you find your LI in it, still alive, but because its a dream you can't do anything, except watch helplessly as the person get liquefied alive.
See Dream Poll.

ME3 should have been made entirely unwelcome to new players.

I could take or leave it. Especially leave the child though. I thought the dead squad members' lines were a nice touch at least. It was interesting what lines they chose to represent various characters. Some of them gave me the chills, actually.
They should have scraped the chase the ****ing brat mechanic. I'm not totally against removing the dreams entirely but the concept didn't bother me, it was the dream subject and presentation.
Like others it would have been better to have Shepard dream about their backgrounds, video/audio of dead squad members, and sure, even throw in a image of the kid and the shuttle blowing up one time.
