What should have Shepard dreamed about?

Really if they had to implement this it should have been an interesting way to show shepard’s past decisions, enemies and loved ones. Not the same running kid...3 times.

Or don't welcome it. That works too. I'm still undecided. I thought ME2 was a good balance between developer and player control.

Maybe she dreams of a hot male love interest that should have been introduced to her in ME3.

They very much changed the degree of control you have over your character from game to game. I would never complain about Niko Bellic or Carl Johnson's dreams being something other than what I thought they should be, because it was established from minute one that they're not my characters.
Mass Effect however lulls you into feeling that you have a greater degree of control. Everything from the ME1/ME2 dialogue wheels to the career and psych history customization says this. If you can personalize your character's past, their decisions, their morality, and their personality, then like it or not you are in danger of feeling that you have more authority on what would haunt their dreams.

The underlying problem is that Bioware wants to consider Shepard their character. And it is.. For all intents and purposes, it is. It's just that they go out of their way in saying it loudly that it becomes annoying. They have no qualms about destroying the illusion that they don't make the old type of role playing games anymore. Crafting and controlling your character is becoming a thing of the past. Welcome the future of "cinematic flow". These things like the dreams are just a symptom of this underlying design.

I certainly hope crafting & controlling your character isn't becoming a thing of the past. The noises coming out of DAI sound promising. Equally like you i thought ME2 did a good job of respecting player characterisation. I won't welcome or embrace the things i love in gaming being swept down the drain in the name of making games into movies(cinematic flow)

Variations on that clip depending upon how far through the game you are would've worked fantastically.

The dream sequences would've been better, in my opinion, if they were like (or in some cases, exactly the same as) the clip that plays in ME2 Arrival if you wait for the timer to get to 00:00:00.

Dreams are personal. Make me dream about things that make my playthrough personal. People who have died, decisions I've made, etc.
Yes, yes, I know, the new players would have nothing to dream about, but what you need to understand about that is -- shut up.
I could get behind this. Honestly I didn't really dislike the idea behind the dreams, and I actually liked the idea of hearing your old squadmates based on who died, but I disliked that they were all the same slow paced run in the same dark place.
Maybe if the seperate sequences were different from each other, or had something related to your personal choices, like talking to someone you left behind, it could have had a little more impact.

- Check player's choices across all the games
- Show visions of peple who died
- Show visions of squadmates who're still alive
- make shepard chase them but making it impossible for him to do so because they drift away from him as the looming presence of a reaper closes in, and he wakes up.
