Last year it happened right before I got GTA4, before that I had one die days before Crysis came out and now it happpens a week before I get ME2, its through BFG so I get another for like 25 bucks shipping and last time I got a better card(had 8800 GTS, got 8800 GTX back) but the timing just couldn't be worse when it has happened.
I have an old x800xl in now but I doubt that will help me too much.    I was able to play Crysis on it barely so maybe there is hope, if not I might have to wait a few days with the CE in hand.

You need to figure out what you do (or don't do) that is harder on them than the normal usage. I have only had fans fail, not cards, for the past 3-4 years, and the last card that quit was previously in a system that underwent an unprotected current spike and lost its modem, one of its RAM DIMMs, and a sound card in that event, so the video card may have been somewhat damaged, but didn't have immediate symptoms.

Power supplies die regularly, fans die regularly, older model hard drives would die fairly often, but not video cards, and not motherboards. Poorly regulated current (cheap power supply), or bad ventilation (too close to a wall, or crowded into a too-small, badly ventilated cabinet area, sitting on the floor on carpet, etc.)

If the BFG tech support wasn't as good as it is I'd be in worse shape I suppose, 25 bucks is definitely better than spending 2-300 on a new card.

EDIT: Well I have a new antec 750 W PSU, 5 case fans with washable filters, plenty of room for airflow, pull it all apart to clean every now and then, 3 fans go in, 2 in the back pump out, no ide cables.  Not sure if its the factory overclock that BFG does but their cards seem to fail on me after a year or so, and have for friends of mine as well, I keep going back to them since its cheaper to RMA but it has seemed ridiculous.
EDIT AGAIN: also its a full tower

If your Motherboard has a PCI Express 2.0 x16 Slot, consider changing brands & giving this card a try:

SAPPHIRE 100258-1GHDMI Radeon HD 4850

Research it & give it a consider.

Hope I helped.

Sucks. Fermi is just around the corner....

How about getting a used crappy card for now and then when fermi is out and ATI and Nvidia once again start a price and feature war, get a new one. Should be around march, no?

Hey, folks, I have owned half a dozen BFG video cards that were factory overclocked and never had one fail. They keep themselves plenty cool, so three in a row seems like really bad luck, or something unusual is happening. For several years here, my electric current ran at almost 130 volts, and I had to give up on any kind of incandescent light bulbs, which would fry in mere weeks. I ran filtered power for the computers while that situation persisted.

In this case, I continue to suspect something is abnormal, perhaps also the wall current. Without meters and other tools on the spot, it can't be eliminated.

Gorath has a good point. Are ya loving your puder enough to ALWAYS plug all of your puder power plugs (& your Ethernet Cords) into full Surge Protection Power Strips? Or are your puder power plugs in Granny Cords?

Well I'll have a new card in the mail in the next week or so, sent out the RMA last night, their warranty is great, just have to pay to ship it, though UPS seems to get 10-15 bucks more expensive every year.

I have my PSU plugged into a power strip but it probably wouldn't hurt to get a new one for ethernet and cable ports on it. The wiring here isn't too bad either, 3+ years on my incandescent lights anyway plus its a relatively new addition to my building. I've seen someone say they RMA'd 5 in one year through BFG so at least I'm not that guy I suppose. It is possible that it is the north bridge on my mobo though, as the video card passes right over the heatsink, its an Asus p5n-32E SLI Plus mobo,

Other than that I just get my use out of it, the past month alone yielded about 100 hours each in Dragon Age and Mass Effect(had a lot of free time), no crashes or instability until the other day.

Plus how fast they were willing to accept my card died seems to be an indication that it isn't incredibly rare but I could be reading to much into that since boot screen artifacting pretty much means dead vid card..

Well it looks like this is going to take a while longer, maybe another month or more so I think I'm going to break down and go get a somewhat cheap card from a store, think a GT220 would be good enough or should I spend a few extra bucks? I'll probably use that for a physics card after also. Question on that too though, I just haven't looked into it enough but you can have 2 different cards without a bridge for 1 card designated for physics with 2 PCI-E slots right or do you need tri-sli?
