Sad but true. Varric has man-bits so he's exempt from having every little aspect of his physical appearance criticized.
Notice how no one is going "HE LOOKS LIKE A GIIIIIIRRRRL wwaahh" or "he's sooo fat ugh Image IPB". On the one hand this is because Varric by his very nature is a flawless masterpiece of a dwarf, but it's also because of an ugly awful double standard that says women have to look ~perfect~ but men can have flaws because reasons.

There were plenty of comments on Zevran and Alistair's appearance in DA2.

I always disliked Varric so much that his looks don't matter to me at all (mind you I only read/wstched a few snippets of DA2 but what I saw, on principle, made me dislike it....tho I have been wrong before)

You take that back! Hahah. Varric is awesome. He was a good buddy to my Hawke while all the other ones had nuances that ranged from crazy to robotic.

not taking it back at all

Varric was literally the only character that I could stand in Kirkwall. Every other person constantly whined about their mama this, and this mirror that. Varric put a bolt in his brother and then walked out smug.

That's how I felt too. It's like he was specifically put into the game as a "Can you believe these chumps?" aside to the player. I might even go on to say that I liked Varric even more than Hawke.

True, but a part of that was the elven redesign/Eclipse engine really not doing them any favors. Morrigan's only crime in DAI is getting older.

For the record, they looked fine to me.

He doesn't look particularly different compared to his DA2 appearance, which I was fine with.

As I've said in other threads, though, I don't expect the current character appearances to remain the same through launch. It's possible, but it's not something I'd count on.

I think 'new' Varric looks great. I don't really think he looks different, the devs did a great job in keeping the Varric charm.

Oh lord, hell knows how many pages of bickering about Cassandra´s new look but that of Varric is all like... Hey! That´s Varric, everything allright if they just keep his chesthair. :)

Yeah, true. But then again many men are quite comfortable about their flaws in comparison to women. (I liked the comment of Shepard about Garrus´ scars: "Garrus, you were allways ugly, just put some paint on it and nobody will notice." Just imagine saying that to a woman. ^_^)

Despite some minor changes, mostly due to the new engine and graphical style, he is still very much Varric. I can't find anything to complain about, I knew it was Varric from the second I saw him. His hair is likely darker, but I think it looks even more so due to the lighting in that scene. His eyes being so much lighter than they were is the thing that stands out the most to me, but all in all Varric has come away from this transition better than before in my eyes.

Cassandra has not unfortunately, but Morrigan too for me has improved greatly over her DAO counterpart. She looks more natural and has aged quite gracefully instilling a strong feeling that she has matured a great deal in the last decade.

So far the look of NPCs in the game has been fantastic, I think DAI will be the strongest and most unique DA title stylistically. DAO was a bit bland on that front, while DA2 improved on a few areas but also missed the mark with others. DAI so far looks like its making all right moves. Can't wait to get my hands on it and craft a character of my own.

I don't mind his new look, as long as he's the same charming Varric as he was in DA2, I'm fine with it.

Now, since he has a new scar to go along with his chest hair, it'll be almost impossible for him to keep women off of him.

With Varric it might be a natural part of dwarf aging process. Perhaps they get darker before they go gray, or maybe it was sunbleached from spending all that time in Kirkwallian sunlight, and for whatever reason it's hitting its natural color. Or, more likely, he looks better in the new engine as a brunette.

As for Morrigan, she looks much as I expected her to. I could do without the beauty mark, but I believe that was common at the time Orlais is modeled after. Cassandra I didn't really see a difference in.

It's hard to say.. I like the new look and I don't. I have no clue what it is I dislike about the new look but it's not something for me to whine about so until the game comes out or as new stuff is released on the game I will hold off on my judgement on that. I have no clue what it is that is making me have mixed feelings on the new look. I have no issues with cassandra's and morrigan's look but varric just stops me in my tracks.

I like the new look. It looks more rugged and realistic to a character that has been a major player in a world in turmoil for the past few years.

The DA2 version is better suited to his personality. That being said, they will probably change that as well in DAI. There is something about the DA2 look that gives him that "teddy bear rascal" look. The DAI look he looks too human and not nearly as fun. Meh....just because one CAN reinvent the wheel doesn't mean one always should.

This was my first thought, too, but once we really get in the game and hear him talking I'm sure he'll seem more familiar. Time and experience have probably changed him somewhat, but I don't think he'll get a complete personality overhaul... it's not like he's possessed. Image IPB

Looks pretty much the same to me, just more detailed because of the better game engine. Hair looks darker because of lighting.

Folks tend to go darker as they get older, especially blondes :) I was a toe head when I was little, and now I'm 30 and my hair is light brown color (when i don't dye it red ;x). It's not to much of a stretch to see him with a darker hair color now that he's a few years older :)

Maybe his personality has changed some over the years.

That's true especially about the fat part. I can't think of a single fat female video game character off the top of my head. Although at the end of the day it's because men place a lot more value on looks than women do, while women won't mind a fat man with a personality. Hence varric. On the other hand women are usually particular about height, so that part is surprising.

and yes. He looks to have been bishonened. I guessing most peeps plan to romance him as another dwarf?

He basically looks the same, but the increased face detail makes him seem different somehow... not by much though. More closely resembles his previous model than Cass does.

Game characters are starting to look like real people and not just plain textures, so "flaws" are noticed more easily. If you think we are critical of appearances now, imagine when photorealism is the standard. Every minute detail will be perfectly visible and open to scrutiny.

Thank you! *hugs*

He looks...well, beaten up, but since the world's gone to the Mabari it makes sense. I hope we get some info on the scar. The hair I can accept - maybe that's what happens to Dwarfs under stress? Maybe he used to dye it in Kirkwall?

He's still my buddy Varric - I'm just glad he's ok!
