What I hate most is that of all the aspects of the games that Bioware offer, it's the romance threads that get the most posts.

So make your own thread and post in it.

*edit* whatever, I'll go back to lurking for another  year until the game comes out. No use putting up with this "what can i sex biower pls" nonsense.

And idk about you, but pissing off a powerful apostate (possibly even a blood mage) with friends in the City Guard and who works directly for the Viscount is not a plan with a long term benefits.

There's a trope for that.

At any rate, I think if you're in an interracial relationship it should be acknowledged... even if it's a one-off line about how it doesn't change your feelings for that person. It doesn't have to be something huge that'll take away from one's enjoyment of the romance; as I said before, I always liked Alistair's fretful "I was worried you'd think I was too tall" comment to dwarf PCs. Even Gamlen's inappropriate (inappropriate IRL, I mean... obviously it was true to his character, lol) comment to m!Hawke romancing Fenris: "So... you're into elves, huh? Guess I don't have to ask which one of you's the girl..." It's all about context.

But what I can't understand is why some people would rather have, say, four love interests... and have one or two or ALL of them say, "I just don't do dwarves." Why not make an NPC who says that? Why does it have to be a romanceable character, one of approximately four people in the entire WORLD who might be interested in your PC, who turns around and says... "NOPE, you have pointy ears, gtfo."

I always wonder the same. There are just so many LI in every single game, due to unavoidable limitations. And still, people always seem to be looking for reasons to have even lest available per character.

Nearly all other aspects of game design (and, hence, discussion of such) requires thought. Romance threads only require emotion.

I'm also curious about how much time any of you even spend around African-Americans. If you grew up in a community with many of them, or spent years around thousands of them, you'd know that their features are not all so stereotypical (not a bad thing, but still).

Apart from her overall beauty, Beyonce has typical African-American features. Her skin color is a bit light, but her features are common.

I'm black. Your argument just died.

Oh, okay let's just say "prejudice against" dating black women, I mean if Kerry Hilson asked you for a date you'd be like "hey sorry your black skin makes your kind unattractive to me" and then deny all of her friends because they may be black as well, yea your right...not racist at all. Sorry.

I don't think you understand what racism is.

Miriam-Webster on racism:
1:  a belief that ]race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race2:  racial ]prejudice or discrimination

Now, to understand that we need to know the definition of discrimination.

Miriam-Webster on prejudice:
an unfair feeling of dislike for a person or group because of race, sex, religion, etc.: a feeling of like or dislike for someone or something especially when it is not reasonable or logical

I don't dislike black people because they are black. I don't dislike black people at all.

I'd be in sorry shape if I did, because looking in the mirror would make me start disliking myself.

I just don't find it sexually or romantically attractive.

No it didn't. I've spent more time around African-Americans than you, most likely.

My family is also black. I lived in very highly populated by African Americans neighborhoods. I'm a part of the black student body organization at my college. We are all black together in our African Americanness. Did I mention that my ery extended family is also black. That's kind of important. I still find white women more attractive. Guess I have problems according to you, sense you know my life better than me.

I liked being able to mention to Alistair "you don't mind I'm an elf?" on my elven mages (though I wish that had been mage because one would think that'd be far more of an issue)  but yeah small comments like that are nice. They enhance the romance. Simply restricting it is eh...

agreed. Why not have one of the one night stands the PC can do say that?

I'm not sure what stereotypes you're referring to--you never mention them and i don't recall others mentioning them.

to be frank Merrill kind of is a racist douche at times. "She'd invite that filthy half blood into the clan but not me?" Nice Merrill real nice.

What do you mean different clan? Merrill's clan is the clan from the DAO origin.

Merrill seems quite open-minded compared to some of the other Dalish.

And yeah, I thought she was from a different clan.  Still, having a powerful elf-blooded mage owing them his life might make them overlook his human-ness

I know which is why my reaction to the whole "Merrill and Hawke not experiencing discrimination is weird" thing was... "wait what?"

It's an area that could be improved upon in future installments.

Yep. They still occur though. Not to mention the PC probably isn't going to be around his/her clan. Now sure said clan can express displeasure but it's not like you're gonna be sticking around long enough for it to be a problem.

Maybe.  But there'll almost certainly be other humans, elves, dwarves, and qunari to make comments.  Heck it could factor into alliances that might or might not form.

The bolded isn't strange or really unexpected given our civilization. (But that's a tangent for another forum). But do you find black women completely unappealing?

There's a difference in preferring one race and finding one completely unappealing.

Maybe he would, but I believe that we humans, as fairly rational beings, are capable of not shagging everything that arouses us, so there is a fundamental difference between what arouses someone and who will said someone be willing to be intimate with.

Agreed. I'm talking about people who say they're not "attracted" to black people.

I would never date a white person, but that doesn't mean I haven't been aroused by a few in my lifetime.

But I'm sure he'll watch for a little bit to see if things get out of hand.
The "I'm not attracted to black females because a) I've never met the right one, B) It's impossible for me to ever be attracted to one, or c) I don't like black skin color/or possibly other racial features common to black people .
That's that poster's choice .
Not mine. I'm a hopeless romantic .

It's not hostile...yet.
Though I guess it is rather off-topic. I'd actually be grateful if this got locked so I can stop sitting in front of my computer like some addict and go to bed. It's 4 am. :crying:

You weren't here for the 4th page till 7-8th page. All the fun posts are in there. Feel free to torture yourself ^_^

*I'm kidding. DO NOT GO THERE.

Oh, I was. I always read every single page of a romance thread. I get angry, I nod my head, I get sad because some people are stupid...really, romance threads on the BSN are better than TV.

I don't know, you don't necessarily have to be a **** to be a racist, you just have to treat someone differently. So your statement does sound racist if you're announcing that "all black women are unattractive, I would never date someone if they were black". You've already universally discounted every black women in existence simply due to their being black.

On the other hand, if what you really meant was more of an observation, ie. "so far I have not seem found any black women attractive at all" then no that's not racist.

I also think it's appalling how everyone one of these threads discussing fictional "race" (more like species or sub-species actually) devolves into a discussion about the unattractiveness of black women. I can't criticise how people feel, but it is sad nonetheless.

The reason this is a topic of discussion is because it relates to party members having race restrictions. Just like real people have real life skin tones they do or do not find attractive, I put forth that party members can and should have racial romance restrictions based on party member.

You raise a good point--let's not forget the context of the discussion.

Depends on what you mean by "black." I find a lot of African American features very unappealing to me sexually, but I'll still be friends with black chicks anyday.

Sorry, but' s it's pretty racist to say a whole group of females are unattractive because of their skin color. It's not racist to say, "I usually dont prefer black women",  It is very racist to say every single woman who is black is unattractive because she is black. It's perfectly fine to have preferences though.

Sorry, i disagree completely. My attraction or lack therof has no bearing whatsoever on how I treat someone, or even how much i like them as a person--hence, it's not racism.

This sounds more like you trying to find a reason to call someone a racist

Or people are trying to find ways to prove they aren't racist  when they really are, which is perfectly fine tbh. But I dont have to duck and dodge I'll call it when I see it.  So what? No one's going to admit it, people like to use coded language to hide, but doesn't everyone know your talking about a black guy when you say "Athletic Quaterback", same exact coded language in a different context on BSN.

You do realise that, should what you suggest be implemented, every PC would likely have a single set posibble LI depending on his/her gender, race and who knows what else?

I think that if the Elf is Dalish no one should romance them.

Dalish are annoying.
