There needs to be some restrictions in place for romances. I mean dwarves could romance dwarves only, same with qunari. Humans and elves can romance each other but not qunari or dwarves. Everyone can understand why, qunari have one thing called the Qun and they have very strict rules. Dwarves have a very rigid social system and castes. So it's only logical thing to do. Not even mentioning physiology. =]
Also we should consider that Thedas has it's fair share of xenophobia and racism.

Black humans should also being restricted from romancing white folks.

*That was sarcasm*

Why restrict dwarves and qunari only, if you're so concerned with "everybody banging everybody!!1"? Why do elves and humans get to fall in love 'despite the lore' but dwarves and elves, or qunari and humans or whatever can't? It's a dumb restriction.

All LIs should have at least one race they won't date.

Arbitrariliy? No. It should be based on the character's personality.

I don't agree, OP. If rational thought was a requirement for romance then I doubt there would be any romance at all.

What is the point of different races if everyone is going to treat you the same?

Treating you differently does not equal never romancing you. Perhaps LI X (a ) would be more difficult to woo as a Qunari, but why should it be impossible

Perhaps in the light of the coming apocalypse and the end of the world, racial prejudices seem slightly less relevant. Or perhaps, after haven proven yourself a decent person (in the eyes of the LI), the person doesn't care what race you are.

Why should there be race restrictions on love interests?

Because it makes sense for certain characters and makes the romances have more weight. Not all people do a romance just to get their pixel fill.

That assumes they've made a character who could not ever fall a [dwarf/human/elf/qunari]. Why should they make a character with that in mind?

I'm certainly not opposed to race being a factor in how others treat you. But you shouldn't be doomed from start with a certain companion just because of the race you picked. Unless the point of the NPC is to hate the protagonist's guts, in which case romance probably wouldn't be on the table for anyone ...

Qunari are at best disdainful of other races, excluding them from certain romances makes sense. Elf/human/dwarf pairings are not unheard of and it would largely fall to the individual characters.

But making everyone available for everyone just seems like pandering.

It's rather likely that we won't be following the Qun and we may not have ever even been part of it so we really can't know how our Qunari would feal about other races.

I am guessing that the roleplaying element of this game will allow us to feal however we want about them.

I would say locking it is pandering as there is no lore reason why it couldn't happen.

Varric is only into female dwarves, I can easliy see a character liek Cass not being into qunari that way.

I also think it's a matter of variety (or lack thereof). If prejudice against, say, Qunari is widespread and people wouldn't wanna be in a relationship with them, why should playing a Qunari limit your options severely for how many potential love interests you have? Unless there were an equal number of additional companions who would only romance a Qunari. To balance it out. But I doubt there would be enough LI's for that.

Peopel are not asking for all romances to be against qunari, only one or at least two. More so if Cass is a LI. She should not be into qunari that way. It would be waaaaaaaaay out of character. It be like Leli plomping Sten.

Did he specifically say female dwarves?  If not, you know the SJC will bring it up and say "He said he wasn't in to humans, but it's been x years!  Maybe he changed!"  or "Did he say he wasn't into elves/qunari?  If not, there's a chance he still is."

Well, hopefully they tell us if they do, so my Qunari doesn't spend the entire game macking it with Varric only for it to be in vain. :S

Varric outright says he's not into humans that way and keeps wishing there was female dwarves in Kirkwall. At best, he is not into humans so if he was made a LI(something that should never happen) he should not be romanced by a human at all.

I think there should be in some cases. For instance, Varric has said he's not into humans, and is old and experienced enough to know his mind here. So he shouldn't be available for humans no matter how badly some people want to romance him.

There were race restrictions for romances in previous Bioware games like Baldur's Gates. Just saying.

I assumed it was coz of Bianca or even just the fact that he wasn't an LI in DA2 but did allot of flirting. Therefore they had to make it clear that he isn't available.

I've only read one page, but this thread seems less scary than I would have expected it to be.

For the record: The OP does not match the title, which should read: "Species Restrictions for Romances." Technically, dwarves, elves and humans are not different races, they are different species.

I think that if the story addresses inter-species issues with romance and mating, that makes sense, and can be handled for both drama and (if desired) commentary. I don't think it would be wise, however, to restrict the Player Character in this regard. While it may be appropriate to have an inter-species romance create conflict, this should be for the opportunity to add a dramatic storyline - the player's opportunity to confront that conflict, as with any other storyline.

It should not limit the player's options, as the OP suggests, but it is entirely appropriate subject matter for a mature RPG.

It does not matte,r Varric has made it clear he's not into humans, if he is a LI and he can be romanced by a human, that goes against established canon.

Damn right I want my Inquisitor to sleep with a broodmother, BioWare is so xenophobic for not letting me, right? Right guys?

If you can bang Qunari, dwarves and elves, I'd also like an option to screw a sibling while we're at it. I'm very open minded and I don't think such issues should be condemned, much the same way as Transgender romances have been discussed. I hope for a game where we can eventually bang the mailboxes free from any opression of a priviliged minority who only want a particular type of romance.

I like this human, he understands!
