They should be done in great detail, because of sheer complexity of issues like love, prejudice, racism, xenophobia. Can developer team do this kind of romance and will you have time for that? This. If the idea of Varric falling madly in love with a human (or whatever) bothers you... then don't romance him with a human. This is assuming that he's a LI in the first place, which we don't know. I just don't understand people getting their undies in a wad over what happens in SOMEONE ELSE'S GAME. It doesn't affect yours at all.
Why get weirded out at the idea of a qunari crushing on somebody's Inquisitor when that has no impact on your playthrough whatsoever?
