Well yeah, it's a summer action movie, not an art house adaptation.  The movie industry is very risk-averse, especially in recent years, and they're not going to take a chance on an arty, postmodern storytelling style when what they want is a solid seller.

Anyway, it isn't bad for what it is, but obviously if you have a commitment to the book then it's bound to be disappointing. Interesting to me, the author at first disavowed the project, but ended up liking the final product because he could watch it as a different story rather than a filming of his book.
