I wonder what those Merril haters would have said if merrils plan worked and created something beneficial for her people

You'd have to drastically rewrite her to not be an idiot first.

Desdpite being  a total social ditz she has accomplished more then the circle has the last thousand years. pretty impressive for an idiot.

Her kind of moronic meddlings with stuff she doesn`t understand is the very reason why there is a circle in the first place.

Change the her to a him to reference Anders and you've pretty much described why the Circles exist.

: Merrill: Are you all right?
Anders: I nearly killed an innocent girl. How could I be all right?
Merrill: I'm sorry.
Anders: You're sorry? For me? This could be you! You could be the next monster threatening helpless girls!

Merrill: Anders... there's no such thing as a good spirit. There never was. All spirits are dangerous. I understood that. I'm sorry that you didn't.

So much for Merrill not "understanding" demons. It should have been communicated better to the player, but Merrill knows that the Pride demon was manipulating her to possess her, but she was willing to take that risk (and die for it) if it actually helped the Dalish. For her final personal quest she tells Hawke that s/he was asked there in case something "bad" happened which is odd planning since Merrill is totally a bumbling idiot that doesn't know anything about the spirits/demons.

which makes it all the worse because she knows she was being manipulated into getting possessed. which IMO makes her more stupid than she already was.

That makes no sense. Merrill needed blood magic to amplify a spell that was used in the Dalish Origin; she needed to cleanse the shard of the taint, and she did so prior to meeting Hawke.

And she manipulates Hawke's emotions so he won't destroy it. Just like a drug addict does.

Not really.  Unless accidentally killing yourself and everyone you know is some kind of mage talent.

Ya know, I kinda like Merril, but I really wish people would stop defending her with the "everyone else is ignorant of the demons/elvens lore/Elluvian" defense.

She was quick to betray you in the fade, the others did the same but she's a mage and should've have known better. It also didn't take the demon lots of convincing.

Yep - that little incident there convinced me Merrill was an utter fool, and that Audacity was a helluva lot more subtle than anyone gave it credit for. It was no surprise to learn it had played Maretheri, too.

At the end of the day, I'd have to agree with that.

Her DA:O-personality_is_drastically different, to a point it would have been more reasonable to go for a different character altogether. Also due to different VA between the two games.

Although then again, as I mentioned the experiences she had in DA2 may lead to her being somewhat closer to her DA:O roots in DA:I.

DA:O and DA2 Sabrae clan and its members are so different from each other, that it would be better if the y simply introduced a new clan
And not the one that already had an established concept and characters

Since they wanted the mirror plot so badly, they could've introduced a new clan who met with the warden's clan and was warned about what happened, maybe a discussion between keepers. That would've made the apprentice from X clan to go check the mirror. How bad can that mirror be? It didn't affect her clan. Maybe they're just exaggerating etc etc. And here enters a new elf for DA2 and the mirror.

Some people think that because she doesn't have Andrastian religious views, and therefore doesn't see the denizens if the Fade as Spirits and Demons, i.e. the First Children of the Maker; she simply sees them as spirits.

Audacity is trapped in a totem. She brought Hawke with her in Act III because she thought Audacity somehow escaped it's prison.

Night Terrors railroads everyone but Anders into betraying Hawke in a matter of seconds. I don't see why anyone would condemn Merrill but give everyone else a pass. It's like when Cullen is blind to apostate Hawke being a mage, or how he brushes off Hawke warning him of Anders' plot against the Chantry.

Everyone else gets a pass because they've never been in the fade before in a waking state. All they know about it is what they've heard, while Merril knows too well what to expect from it, and she just jumped at the first opportunity because "lol, I have candies".
And the only reason she brought Hawke with her to act III was because she couldn't fix her stupid mirror and needed his/her help, and only when she got there she realized the demon was no longer in its prison.

I don't think  the distinction between spirits and demons is strictly an Andrastian idea. Marethari uses it more than once.

It's plot railroading, which is why everyone but Anders betrays Hawke in seconds; no different than Cullen handwaving Hawke's warning about Anders.

Hawke doesn't know how to fix the Eluvian; Merrill was concerned Audacity had gotten loose from the totem, as she explicitly tells Hawke in her home in the Alienage.

I still have no idea why that Dalish clan had to appear in DA2. Though it was probably another case of shoehorning something from Origins into the game instead of making anything new.

Marethari also uses the term the 'Fade' when Dalish call it the Beyond; she's speaking to a human who sees from a different cultural perspective than she does. And it's nature as an Andrastian distinction is brought up in Dragon Age II:

Anders: Maybe you don't really understand the difference between spirits and demons.

Merrill: Did I ask you?

Anders: Spirits were the first children of the Maker, but He turned his back on them to dote on His mortal creations. The ones who resented this became demons, driven to take everything mortals had and gain back the Maker's favor.

Merrill: Your 'Maker' is a story you humans use to explain the world. We have our own stories. I don't need to borrow yours.

It doesn't make sense for her to be the same naive person we met in DA2 after learning the hard life lesson she learns at the end of DA2. I expect she will be a bit less naive and a bit more thoughtful if we do see her again.

Anders' short story depicted him as an invincible cannibal. Anders' dialogue in-game states that the distinction is religious, as the dialogue above shows.

The first time he went into Justice Rage Mode he was, sure.  The fact that Merrill makes no distinction between demons and spirits doesn't mean that no Dalish do, ever. It doesn't mean that no other non-Andrastian society with magical traditions make the distinction either.

Mages are not granted some special exception from mind control. Merrill was as susceptible to the demons' magic as any of your companions.

The Mage Warden had been to the Fade before and fought with demons. That didn't make the Mage Warden magically immune to the Sloth Demon's infuence during the encounter in the Circle Tower.

I think that Merrill's obsession is similar to what one might find in some history doctoral students. Sitting in a small low-rent apartment contemplating the same things for years... sounds like a not-too-uncommon graduate school experience to me. So I don't find it that unreasonable.
