Being tricked by a demon in the fade: Mind Control.
Being manipulated by a demon stuck in a rock: It's a demon. It's ancient history.
Asking you to kill her if she gets possessed: Too late, the Keeper gets first, your argument is invalid.
Merrill can do no wrong.
That's what I'm getting from this little crusade.

Pretty much. Her story-arc writing didn't do her any favors as well. When I first met her I thought the idea of restoring the mirror was great due to my interested being picqued thanks to the Witch Hunt DA:O dlc. I love games that introduce a terrific mystery and actually give you a good payoff later on in the game. What we got in DA2 wasn't anything like that. No great secrets were revealed and all we ended up with was a variable number of dead elves on the side of a mountain.LOLandStuff wrote...

Well, her story arcs were pretty ****ty in terms of dynamic choices. At least with Fenris you get the option of selling him and/or killing or saving the sister. Personally, the problem with her story is that I don't get told **** and we're railroaded into killing Marethari instead of seeing Merrill's consequences play through (or her rewards if she'd been successful). Luke Skywalker would have been seen as the biggest dolt in Star Wars if he'd taken off his targetting computer and his shot in the Death Star missed, afterall. I wouldn't have minded needing to kill Merrill in Act III if it made sense but we don't get that choice.
Also, seriously, you're still talking about the fade demon betrayal? Every single companion betrays Hawke there. If I brought Hawke's mom in there, she'd kill Hawke too (probably for some contrived reason like resurrecting her husband). Same with the twins, probably for more contrived reasons like more power and growing out of their sister's shadow.
If Varric got won over then everyone else is doomed to backstab you in that situation.

Yes, when other people do things, some of us blame those specific people, rather than Merrill. I'm surprised people haven't blamed Merrill for the Chantry blowing up or Meredith buying the lyrium idol.

Hawke explicitly says it was mind control to Isabela. And it's an asinine quest.

Merrill already points out the oddity of Audacity being silent in Act III when her Eluvian remained inert, as though it may no longer be trapped in the totem, and fearing the worst. Merrill prepared. And she never released Audacity in seven years, while Marethari did, who seemed to be it's real target.

Merrill has flaws and makes mistakes. Some of us simply don't condemn her for the actions of other adults.

I agree. You can only blame Merrill for her own shortcomings: not seeing how Audacity was using her as a wedge to exploit Marethari. Whatever Marethari ended up doing in that situation isn't Merrill's fault. At the same time, it's wrong to say that she didn't fall prety to the demon.

But Merrill didn't fall prey to the demon; she defeated Audacity (with Hawke's backup, but Audacity had Marethari's backup, so it evens out) and lost nothing except opportunity. Audacity wasn't corrupting Marethari for the hell of it; it wanted to use her to get out into the world, and that plan failed.I agree. Wrong that's why she asked Hawke to go with her to kill her if she got possessed ergo she was going to free him.The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...
Also wrong. She doesn't go there to "barter" with Audacity -- which denotes a "give and take" exchange. She goes there to find out if it knows anything, telling Hawke that she has no intention of freeing him from his prison.
So if he said "I'll only tell you X if you free me", she wouldn't free him. As Audacity is cut off from the Fade, trapped, and substantially weakened, he cannot mind control anyone (but he can engage in subtle manipulation, as he proved with Marethari over the course of 7 years. And it's not something exclusive to Demons).
And if he did tell her, she could just say "Screw you!" and leave him there.
So yeah... no "bartering" was going to take place. But continue to believe that if you want.
You're wrong. Play aggressive Hawke. She specifically says she won't free him. What she asks Hawk to do, and I'm playing this part right now, so it's pretty fresh for me, she's asking Hawke to accompany her, and if the worst happens, to kill her. She isn't bringing him because she intends to barter. She isn't bringing him because she intends to free the demon. She's bringing Hawke as a failsafe.
Ergo, she's being cautious.

The intelligence is in bringing the killing machine known as Hawle with her. If audacity was free the plan was to kill it. If not, get information from it.

She was planning on summoning it. "Your first is going to summon a demon to help her fix her mirror." is what diplo Hawke can say to Marethari. Merrill's reaction is "Did you really have to say it that way?"

Audacity is already in the mortal world of Thedas; it can't be summoned from the Fade. And Merrill communicated with Audacity once before to learn blood magic; even Marethari doesn't say that Merrill would release Audacity, since she thinks it will escape through the restored Eluvian.

Why do people think Merrill is selfish and arrogant? She's stated repeatedly that everything she's done is to help her clan. And she certainly doesn't come off as "I'm better than everyone else, only I can do this blah blah blah". When she banters with Isabela she actually seems to have low self-esteem.
