Can't we just agree they're both idiots?

Both Marethari and Audacity, I agree with that.

Eye witness accounts of the now fugitive elf Merrill setting fire to an orphanage cannot be denied. Her supporters, however, beg to differ and place the blame squarely on the lack of proper smoke detectors and fire suppression devices in the facility. When questioned by authorities, Merrill denied such accounts and even went so far to say that she couldn't identify a burning building if her very life depened on it citing this conversation she had with the Champion to support such a claim.

O that's pure bollocks. That orphanage attacked first. Damn blood mage kids the lot of 'em. :P

Besides, if we take the same blame logic in this thread, it was the orphanage's fault Merrill burned it down. The orphanage should have forseen a naive bubble head elf might mistake it for the Hanged Man and bump a lamp on the floor. The orphanage should never have dabbled in lamp technology, they knew the risks of fire in a wood building and now the children living there paid the price.

I have serious doubts that Marethari actually loved Merrill, to be honest. There aren't many signs of it past Act 1.

I'm perfectly willing to agree that Merrill is an idiot. But not for her dealings with Audacity, Marethari or the eluvian.

Anything else can be explained by cultural unfamiliarity.

I would agree, but the game takes place over seven years, and she doesn't get any more familiar.

She's dead in my playthrough.

I greatly enjoyed butchering her.

She does. Everything that's any kind of ridiculous is over with by the end of Act 1.

That would actually make Marethari more sympathetic to me.

She was cute for a while, but now she just reminds me of the DAO Merrill who I liked more.

You could say the same about Cullen, too, given his reaction to the warning about Anders' plot against the Chantry.

I thought Gaider and his staff blew it by changing Merrill and by changing Anders.
To me it's much worse than the controversies over Leliana and OGB.
I don't consider those retcons, while what was done with Merrill and Anders were retcons, imo.
There's all this quote stuff from developers about the warden and hawke being in DAI.
Well lets have all the surviving characters from DAO, Awakening, , the other DAO dlcs, DA2, and its dlcs show up in DAI, including Merrill .
Let's have them all.
shrugs.

I never cared at all about the Merrill I met in the Dalish origin. She was just there for a singular purpose, and never had any substance. She didn't even warrant a "meh."

I liked her more than Tamlen, who was meant to be my bestest bud, but neither of them got much screen-time anyway. I would've liked to see that Merrill thrown into the deep end learning about human society but I guess it might have been a bit too similar to Velanna.

It's not that I don't like the DA2 Merrill - she's a good character in her own right, but as a rewrite of an existing character I perferred the old one. Come to think of it, given how unrecognizable the clan was from DAO to DA2 I'm not really sure why it was worth using them at all.. I made a new dalish warden when I heard that they'd be returning but all I really got for my trouble was cognative dissonance.

Yep Marethari goes from someone who shoves the infected DE to the Wardens for the greater good to someone who ignores the rest of her clan for Merrill's sake. Bah

Well, it's not like she could have saved Maharial if he or she had stayed so it was for their 's sake too.

They would have been fine if they had Merrill-proofed the building. Sheesh. :pinched::P
