I'd like to know if I'm doing something wrong, but why does my toon stand looking at his fallen foe after he knocks it down?  Even the rogue who should be diving in with both blades flashing at that helpless torso takes a little break to clean the blood off his tunic.  Am I missing something, or not doing something right.  Thanks in advance for the help.

Make sure that you don't have your party set to 'Hold Position'. I sometimes forget to put them back to move freely once the fight gets into close quarters--and see the same thing happen. The problem is that the shield bash knocks the target back a little bit, meaning the tank needs to move a half a step closer to get into weapon range again. If 'Hold Position' is in effect, he'll just sit there and wait for the enemy to recover and move back to melee range itself before attacking again.

The rogue may have a similar problem, even if standing behind the bashed enemy. You'll find that you also cannot attack enemies that are too close to you, the rogue may need to take a step back to have room to swing.

The other potential problem could be your tactics settings. If the behavior is set to one where they won't pursue an enemy that 'flees' out of melee range, that would cause the same problem--the knockback pushes the enemy out of range, and the AI is set to not pursue.

I find that if I'm controlling the toon in that situation, that I have to re-initiate the regular attack as well.

This.

Since the target changes position you need to reclick on theit.  It's like that for many abilities.  Seems like your char just doesn't want to auto take that one extra step after the abilitity to hit the target so you need to do it manually.

what are your tactics? Would having one of the actions set to 'attack' listed after your 'shield bash' slot help?

You could also follow it up with another ability like Assault or Overpower.  I string together my attacks one after the other.  Usually leaving Shiled Bash for last, gives me time to recharge or adjust attack if needed.

Well I was doing some testing and I followed though pretty good every time I got a bash or knock down.  I auto swinged into mid air above the fallen enemy.
