So the Hammerhead (Hover-Mako) is going to be (free) DLC only?

All of this is to offset Gamestop's discounting of said used games. "GameStop, the most famous (or infamous) retailer in the used game business, tends to mark down popular games by $5-8. By roping off used copies from that amount (or more) worth of DLC, EA is essentially stripping any savings from buying used -- and that may be exactly the point."

But if the DLC buy is only $5 from a used copy, EA/BioWare still doesn't get the full amount it could have made to a real "new" sell.

Didn't used DOA DLC cost like $15? - or did I read that wrong from somewhere?

you bring up a really good point. i think the "$5" figure is just a real low-ball guess. if their intent is to off-set any losses from gamestop used sales, it would need to be closer to $10 or $15.

the one bright spot? i think EA could only justify this price/arrangement with a boatload of future DLC. since we already know they have a whole team dedicated to just that, it's not a surprise...but still. sounds like we'll have ME2 goodness for a long time to come!  :o

actually, i think they're one step ahead of us! the paragraph below is from the same 1up article. i don't remember seeing or hearing what this guy mike capps is suggesting, but it doesn't seem so far fetched now, does it???

"Gamers with long memories might recall suggestions like this one coming over a year ago, from Epic boss Mike Capps. Though it caused no small deal of consternation at the time, Capps pointed out that game companies were suffering from the used game market, and were looking for ways to offset the loss. "I've talked to some developers who are saying, 'if you want to fight the final boss you go online and pay USD 20, but if you bought the retail version you got it for free'," Capps said at the time. This isn't quite that drastic or costly, but the principle is the same. Game developers are tired of being undermined at retail. We can expect to see more of this from EA, and likely other companies, in the future."

If that is true that you don't have the car without the DLC, it might just be the first time I'd avoid extra content for free, lol.

That car and it's horrible controls can DIAF

The website for Mass Effect 2 now has some additional information about Cerberus Network and DLC Handling.

Q: How exactly does the Cerberus Network work?
Included in each copy of Mass Effect 2 for both PC (digital and box) and X360 there is a Cerberus Network card with a unique single-use activation code. From the Mass Effect 2 main menu in game, follow the instructions to register your code with the Cerberus Network. Once you are a member you will gain access to FREE additional content. Currently we have announced Zaeed, the deadly bounty hunter, the Cerberus Assault Gear, and a bonus N7 mission with more content on the way. Cerberus Network codes can be purchased separately as well. Follow the instructions from the Mass Effect 2 main menu for more information.
Q: Will there be regular paid DLC outside of the Cerberus Network?
Yes, there will be additional content outside of the Cerberus Network as well. We have not announced specifics of this content through. More information will come in the future.

What this means (unless I am suffering a major Reading Comp failure)
1.) Cerberus Network content is in fact free (once you get the code either in new game or separate purchase.)
2.) Not all DLC will require Cerberus Network Access, but will have a Price tag attached for non Cerberus DLC

the content on the cerberus network is free anythin outside of it will cost money. its jus a system to reward ppl for buyin the game new... this has been said many times. but as for the hammerhead, the uncharted planets have been scrapped. the new ones you jus scan for resources and some will contain certain spot where you can land to do missions (aka N7 missions). but there is no walking around stupid empty planets anymore. theyre not keepin anythin from us, the new dlc is jus stuff they had planned but scrapped from the final game

How is the Hammerhead supposed to work anyway? I mean, none of the current content needs or probably even has room for a vehicle. It seems like they would really have to add in a LOT of landing activities to make it more than a 10 minute novelty.

I completeley agree- the new random missions were much better designed than ME1, but they have no space anywhere for a giant hover-tank thing.

They would have to make a whole bunch of ME1 style planets, and that would be a kind of strange but also work-intensive add-on...

Unless they already made it. There are plenty of Hostile planets that seem to serve no real purpose whatsoever. I mean, are we really drifting out to different systems just to scan minerals? or are some of those planets placeholders for Hammerhead missions?

I think your second option is right. I figure there should be at least one landable (is landable a word?) planet in each system. I think this is where you will see the Hammerhead in action. I did like how you scould use the Meko on story missions in ME1. That is a little bit of a letdown in ME2.

The big question is when do we expect to see it?
