I don't have much of a life, and games are much more entertaining than TV. *shurgs*

I play games for a number of things. Entertainment, escapism, comedy, tragedy... but ultimately, I play for the story. I love literature, and to me, games have the potential to be *more* than books, and slowly, they're reaching there.

I love stories, and for me, interacting and taking *part* of the story is a dream come true. Games aren't about violence, killing, and blowing up ****. If we were to look at everything at face value, sure we could come up with the same shallow evaluation.

Macbeth is about a crazy dude making poor career choices; The Taming of the Shrew is sexist and offensive; A Song of Ice and Fire is bad because thirteen year olds are described in detail having sex with thirty year old men; Harry Potter encourages students to rebel against authority figures and is about pointless murder.

See how I just twist and destroy everything, missing the point entirely? Sadly, people do that with games as well, never leaving the mindset of the medium's original goal. Of course, there is nothing wrong with being entertained. But calling it a superficial and pointless (almost harmful) experience meant only to kill time is like comparing it to heroin.

So yeah, I'm going off in a tangent. Basically, I play for the writing, the story, the setting, the characters. I play games for the same reason I love reading. To escape, have fun, and get something substantial, educational and special in return.

Escapism from real life, mainly. Relieves stress and provides entertainment.

This also for fun when I've got time to kill. So same reasons I read books and watch films/tv shows. Games are that to me just we more interactivity.

Same reason I read novels and watch movies. Partly escapism and partly because I love the way a video game can explore a story.

I don't usually play video games, but when I do it is in order to wind down after a long day.

I play video games because I grew up with a dad who does. Also, I am very shy and anti-social, so games are something for me to do by myself or over the internet. There is one game I currently play, that I originally started playing because I didn't have a girlfriend. Now that I do have a girlfriend, and I met her in the game, I play it purely so I can chat with her.

Another thing, I find video games are much more interesting than real life.

I originally did it because I was surrounded by it via my nerdy family. I do it now because I'm a nocturnal hermit and have not much else to do. For a more specific answer, there's a gameinformer article that spells it out quite well: Why We Play: How our desire for games shapes our world.

Fun and just that, not much more to it than that. Playing video games to escape reality would be like getting drunk to escape reality, there's no point to it, at least not to me, in the end you'll have to go back to reality, so it'd be more like avoiding reality instead of escaping it.
