Depends on which game I'm playing. Sometimes for fun, sometimes for story, sometimes for both, and sometimes (and I realize this sounds kind of lame), because it feels as if it is my duty to finish some games.

I did it for fun growing up, but now a lot of gaming is stress relief, to pass the time, or the two combined. I have taken to playing final fantasy on my Iphone during my breaks at work since it is quick to boot up and has a nifty quick save feature (since I only have fifteen minutes for a break and less if I need food)
Speaking of which, wondering the woods aimlessly had the fantastic result of
Lich:You will never defeat me!
4 turns later
Lich :ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff-dissolves into nothingness-
and
Marilith: something something fire snakes!
5 turns tops
Marilith: I'm dying, fire something snakes, screw yourself!

Wait ... you guys are saying videogames aren't real?

Damnit and all the time I told those countless interested women I was engaged in a serious relationship with Liara.

Well f*** ...

I paint myself blue and touch myself... it helps with the pain of hair-loss.

Omg I can't believe I just wrote that

That's not lame at all. I feel that way about most things I start. Plus when you think about the money you spent on the game....

For fun, don't need to explain it anymore than that.

Same as tc for most part. Also that games can do things that film will never do. Pros and cons to everything and all. Refer to people like Hideo Kojima, Ken Levine, David Cage, and how they take advantage of the interactive medium in their own special way.

Can't wait for Beyond Two Souls! Looks deep....

And I just have a crush on Ellen Page oooooooooooooo. (>^_^)>

Suppose I can go a bit more in-depth. One of the main allures of video games is the power of illusion. More immersive-focused games like Myst got me interested early on in the feeling of being in another world through atmosphere and particular design elements. I grew up in a heavily music-focused lifestyle, so music games were a very strong fit for me.

I like games as a form of interactive story. That form of storytelling has its own pros and cons, but its nonetheless enticing - I like a story that requires participation from the viewer, instead of just staring ahead at a video screen until it's done.

Nowadays I play for relaxation & fun, sort of like a hobby. I've been an actual addict for a long time in my life (more or less from when I was 10 until 20). That was mostly an extreme form of escapism due to a crappy home situation. Happy to say that, in the meanwhile, I got my priorities straight. I definitely still spend more time than average on gaming, but it's not interfering with real life anymore.

different reasons for different games
sometimes I want challenge (especially if strategy is involved) and the elation of finally succeeding
and then there's the unlocking\\collecting or exploration and the joy of discovery
other times I just want the fun/excitement of mayhem creation (and the police don't like it if I try that in the real world)
and then again I enjoy the immersion in a fantasy world and meeting the people there

For an interactive story.
Chance to be a heroine and change lives.
Chance to do things I can't do in real life.. Like be an elf. Shoot lightning from my fingertips etc.
Chance to go back in time or have free plastic surgery without having to live with the consequences.
Chance to hook up and do something I really enjoy with other people that enjoy it too

Sitting on the bed

Or lying wide awake

There's demons in my head

And it's more than I can take

I think I'm on a roll

But I think it's kinda weak

Saying all I know is

I gotta get away from me

' gotta get away from me

gotta get away from meeeeeeeeeeee
