When I turn my xbox on it makes a sound that sounds identical to my phone when it vibrates.  I don't like it. Why does it do this?

Maybe your hard drive is on the fritz. Is this when you are playing games or just when you turn it on? If it's when you turn it on and nnot spinning a disc it is your hard drive. If you play games from the dvd drive and it is making this noise you might be just looking at a bad disc drive.

Usually when I turn it on, but sometimes it just does it at random times.

Are you running games in Disc form or have you installed them to your hard drive?

Does it make the sound when you are not playing games? If not try installing games to your hardrive and see if that helps.

If you have had the box refurbished or anything like that, there is a chance the fan is touching something it shouldnt. I'll take this opportunity to point you in the direction of a ps3 (hehehe)

I'm on my third, and I'm due for it to brake again. Its actually been a whole year since it last broke, so I'm about 4 months over how long they usually seem to last.

No, I'm busy playing Oblivion on my 360, so it better hold up. Besides it's been doing that noise since the summer.

Well that's quite a while... Did you have it fixed? M$ are inFamous for not putting them back together properly.

Besides the fan, the disc reader could have somehow moved out of place and be touching something as you power it on and off...

Overall rule: if something sounds like if it is about to explode, take it to repair. lol.

Mine came back from repair sounding like a chainsaw. The fan was screwed wrong.

I don't know what you can do without sending it in... but if it has been going since July, there is a chance that at some point it will actually stop working... is there any way to backup the data?

the xbox: if something is grinding against something else it will eventually damage it, or generate too much heat and cause other problems. The hard drive is tied to the xbox (or at least they used to be) so if you refurb you lose your data because the new machine cannot see the old hdd.

Because M$ have rather backwards DRM.

The xbox will see the drive, however you will have to migrate your data because of the serial number association with the 360. I gave up on the whole thing about a year ago so I don't know if it has changed now. Just make sure you are informed and all should be good.

DA:O is very heavy on the disc access, i recommend you install it to the HD - greatly reduces disc wear/load times/texture popping.

Their have been about 4-5 different DVD drives used in the various 360 SKU's and also different configurations of heatsinks etc- resulting in their being louder or quieter 360s depending on your model.

But yeh, it always makes sense to install any game your going to play to HD, even if you only have enough room for 1 game at a time - it only takes 5 mins to install and 5 seconds to delete.

Seems your playing oblivion now, which was pretty infamous back in the day for being able to scratch itself with too much disc access :P

Install it to the harddrive. It will significantly reduce the chances of your disc drive dying on you and the red ring of death. If you don't have space, delete a game you rarely play. You can always re-install it later. After my first X-box died on me and the disk drive on the refubed they sent me, I install everything to my new 360. When I run out of space on the harddrive I just delete an old game.

Edit: Heh, Oblivion killed my disc drive. It was the main reason I started installing games to my HD on my new 360.

I refuse to install games on my hard drive, my xbox can go ahead and break, If it does break microsoft will just send me another one that barely work, and I'm back where I started.

You can easily put your new Hard Drive on another new Xbox. My Elite died. I bought an arcade as my elite was past warranty and I figured I would just buy a new one and get the elite fixed later. I put the 120 GB hard drive on my new Xbox 360 Arcade. The only thing I have had to do is reinstall some games to the hard drive.

Never had any problems with my Live account or gamertag or profiles or anything. Just plugged the new HD in, reinstalled my games that I was playing and went along my merry way.
