Because the GT has DR and better shields while still maintaining solid killing ability I'm going with the GT.
I prefer to use the GI because I don't like DoT and while flamer can cause enemies to panic the proxy mine staggers. The debuff from the proxy and cloak provides you exceptional killing power as well as the debuff helping teammates.

Edit: oops read it as Volus Mercenary. 
Depends on map and spawns I guess. Not saying he's bad on maps like Condor etc.

Yes; with the last rank on elite mercenary, regenerate mines 100 percent faster, along with granade capacity V or assualt load out, you can spam mines and not run out; not even the melee GI can out DPS on gold, and is a different story on plat.

 Haven't played him except for about 3 waves because doing so screws up keybindings on PC, and fixing that in coalesced somehow screwed up vaulting over cover for me, so I don't really have a hands-on opinion.  My opinion from seeing other people play him, and from kalence/narida is that he's way OP but requires knowledge which is not widespread.  I've seen 2 people play him well on platinum, and about 10 who died every wave on gold and ended up with <50K points.  I don't think he's that exploitable though, outside of team speedruns.  As far as whether he's better than the GI/GT, my indirect experience says no.

ya that sucks because using thermal clips enables you to throw 19 to 24 cain mines at a spawn without stopping... i need to duo with a gi to see how i would stack up head to head with the gi. also straight cain mining spawns actually gives out less score per kill for some odd reasonnas opposed to killing enemies thru normal means
